PRECAUTION
General Notes
1. Disassemble the transaxle in a clean area (dustproof work space) to prevent entry of dust into the mechanisms.
2. Inspect the individual transaxle components in accordance with the QUICK DIAGNOSIS CHART during disassembly.
3. Use only plastic hammers when applying force to separate the light alloy case joints.
4. Never use rags during disassembly; they may leave particles that can clog fluid passages.
5. Several parts resemble one another; organize them so that they do not get mixed up.
6. Disassemble the control valve assembly and thoroughly clean it when a clutch or the brake band has burned or when the ATF has degenerated.
Cleaning Notes
1. Clean the transaxle exterior thoroughly with a steam cleaner or cleaning solvents before disassembly.
2. Clean the removed parts with cleaning solvent, and dry with compressed air. Clean out all holes and passages with compressed air, and check that there are no obstructions.
CAUTION: Wear eye protection when using compressed air to clean components.
PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Do not allow the ATF to spill when removing the torque converter.
1. Remove the torque converter from the converter housing.
2. Pull out the oil pump shaft by hand.
3. Remove the oil level gauge and oil filler tube.
4. Assemble the SST (or equivalent).
5. Attach suitable hangers to the oil pump as shown.
6. Lift the transaxle and mount it on the SST (or equivalent).
CAUTION: Do not lean the transaxle to one side during disassembly. It may rotate suddenly and cause injury.
7. Remove the input/turbine speed sensor, transaxle range switch, and bracket.
8. Disconnect the solenoid connector.
NOTICE: Remove the oil pan before turning the transaxle over. This will ensure that any foreign material remains in the pan.
9. Remove the oil pan and gasket.
A. Examine any material found in the pan or on the magnet to determine the condition of the transaxle.
B. If large amounts of material are found, replace the torque converter and carefully check the transaxle for the cause.
10. Remove the clip.
11. Disconnect the solenoid connectors.
12. Remove the strainer.
13. Remove A and B bolts and the brackets shown.
Bolt length (Measured from below the head):
A: 1.18 inch (30 mm)
B: 1.97 inch (50 mm)
14. Remove the control valve body.
15. Remove the A/T control cable.
A. Remove the A/T control cable attaching bolt and bracket.
B. Disconnect the cable from the crank lever.
16. Remove the manual shaft and manual plate.
A. Loosen the nut and pull out the manual shaft.
B. Remove the nut, washer, and manual plate.
17. Remove the bolt and parking pawl lever holder.
18. Remove the parking pawl lever.
19. Remove the detect lever and return spring.
20. Remove the actuator support.
21. Remove the oil pump assembly.
22. Remove the reverse/forward clutch assembly.
A. Remove the turbine shaft snap ring.
B. Pull the reverse/forward drum and remove the clutch assembly.
23. Remove the small sun gear and one-way clutch No. 1.
NOTICE: Use a piece of wire to secure the brake band so that it is not damaged by being stretched.
24. Remove the 2-4 brake band.
25. Pull the anchor shaft while holding the strut.
26. Remove the strut.
27. Remove the servo.
A. Compress the servo piston and remove snap ring.
B. Remove the servo retainer, servo piston, and spring.
28. Remove the one-way clutch No. 2 and planetary carrier assembly.
A. Remove the snap ring.
B. Remove the one-way clutch No. 2 together with the planetary carrier assembly.
29. Remove the internal gear.
A. Remove the snap ring.
B. Remove the internal gear from the output shell.
30. Remove the 3-4 clutch assembly.
A. Remove the O-ring from the turbine shaft at the converter housing side.
B. Pull out the turbine shaft to remove the 3-4 clutch assembly.
C. Remove the 3-4 clutch assembly from the turbine shaft.
31. Remove the bolts and remove the transaxle case by tapping lightly with a plastic hammer.
32. Remove the output shell from the output gear.
33. Remove the differential assembly.
34. Remove the bearing housing.
A. Remove the roll pin with a pin punch.
B. Remove (8) bolts securing the bearing housing.
C. Remove the bearing housing by tapping lightly with a plastic hammer.
35. Remove the idler gear assembly and output gear assembly by tapping out from the torque converter side.
36. Remove the bearing cover.
A. Remove the bearing cover bolts.
B. Remove the converter housing from the SST (transaxle hanger).
C. Press the bearing cover assembly out of the converter housing.
NOTICE: Install the bearing outer race during reassemble to adjust the preload.
37. Press out the bearing outer races by using the SST (or equivalent).
