Differential Bearing Preload
NOTICE:
- Use the SST shown to inspect and adjust the preload.
- The next eighteen steps measure the differential side bearing preload and select the proper adjustment shim(s).
SIDE BEARING PRELOAD
1. Remove the side bearing outer race and adjustment shims from the transaxle case.
2. Set the transaxle case on a stand and install the SST (bolts).
3. Tighten the SST (bolts) to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 27 - 38 ft. lbs. (3 - 51 Nm)
4. Set the differential assembly into the converter housing.
NOTICE: Eliminate the gap (arrow) by turning either A or B of the selector. Do not overtighten.
5. Install the side bearing outer race removed from the transaxle case into the SST. Set the SST and outer race onto the differential assembly.
6. Set the six SST (collars) on the converter housing in the positions shown.
7. To seat the bearing, turn the SST (selector) to increase the clearance indicated by the arrow with the SST (bars) until it no longer turns.
8. Turn the selector in the opposite direction until the gap is reduced.
9. Insert the SST (differential rotator) through the transaxle case and attach it to the pinion shaft.
10. Install the torque meter.
NOTICE: Read the preload when the differential is rotating.
11. Adjust the clearance of the SST selector to obtain the specified preload reading.
Preload: 4.3 inch lbs. (0.5 Nm)
12. Measure the clearance between A and B.
13. Add 0.0118 inch (0.3 mm) to the measured clearance and select the shim(s) closest in value to the measurement.
NOTICE:
- Measure the clearance around the entire circumference and select shims based on the maximum clearance.
- The maximum allowable number of shims is 3.
14. Remove the transaxle case and SST (shim selection set).
15. Install the required shim(s) and tap the bearing race into the transaxle case.
16. Install the transaxle case.
Tightening torque: 28 - 38 ft. lbs. (38 - 51 Nm)
17. Using the SST (differential rotator) and a torque meter, verify that the preload is within specification. If not within specification, return to Step 1.
Preload: 27.6 - 33.6 inch lbs. (3.0 - 3.9 Nm)
18. Remove the transaxle case.
