Bearing Preload

NOTICE:
- Use the SST shown to adjust the preload.
- The next twenty steps measure the output gear bearing preload and selection of the proper adjustment shim(s).

1. Remove the bearing outer race from the bearing cover.
2. Install the bearing cover with the SST.

3. Align the bearing cover with guide bolts as shown, and press it in. Torque the bearing cover bolts.

Tightening torque: 96-120 inch lbs. (10.8-13.7 Nm)

4. Remove the bearing outer race and adjustment shims from the bearing housing using a pin punch and
hammer.

5. Install the bearing outer race to the bearing housing.

NOTICE: Do not install the adjustment shims.

NOTICE: Eliminate the gap (Arrow) by turning A or B of the selector.

6. Set the SST onto the converter housing.
7. Install the outer race removed in step 1 to the SST.

8. Set the output gear assembly onto the SST.
9. Set the four SST (collars) on the converter housing in the positions shown.

10. Set the bearing housing on the output gear assembly and install the four SST (bolts); then tighten them to the specified torque.

Tightening torque: 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm)

11. To seat the bearing, turn the SST (selector) to increase the clearance indicated by the arrow with the SST (bars) until the SST no longer turns.
12. Turn the selector in the opposite direction until the gap is reduced.

13. Mount the SST and torque meter on the output gear.
14. Adjust the clearance of the SST to obtain the specified preload.

Preload: 0.27-7.8 inch lbs. (0.03-0.8 Nm)

NOTICE: Read the preload when the output gear is rotating.

NOTICE:
- Measure the clearance around the entire circumference and select shims equivalent to the maximum clearance.
- The maximum allowable number of shims is 7.

15. Measure the clearance. Select adjustment shim(s) equivalent to the measured clearance.

16. Remove the bearing housing and SST.
17. Remove the bearing outer race from the bearing housing, refer to BEARING AND RACE LOCATIONS.
18. Install the required shim(s).

19. Press the bearing race into the bearing housing with the SST (or equivalent).
20. Press the bearing outer race into the bearing cover.

21. Install the output gear assembly and bearing housing.

Tightening torque: 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm)

NOTICE: Do not install the idler gear at this time.

22. Using SST K94A-4200-T2 and a torque meter, verify that the preload reading is within specification.

Preload: 0.27-7.8 inch lbs. (0.03-0.8 Nm)

23. Remove the bearing housing and output gear assembly.
