Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair
AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC UNIT (ADU) SERVICE
WARNING
Improper handling of the ADU may result in unplanned air bag deployment, which can cause serious injury. Read all the service warnings before performing service.
Air Bag Diagnostic Unit (ADU) Removal
1. Follow the GENERAL PROCEDURES.
2. Remove the four rear console mounting screws (two at lower front and two at lower rear).
3. Remove the rear console.
4. Remove the two front console mounting screws (one each side at lower front).
5. Remove the front console. The automatic shift lever will need to be shifted to rear most position.
6. Disconnect the ADU connector(s).
7. Remove the four mounting nuts.
8. Lift the ADU up and back and remove from vehicle.
NOTICE
Removing the ADU may require loosening of the two nuts that secure the automatic shift cable housing to the tunnel.
WARNING
Do not disassemble any air bag-SRS components. Disassembly can render the system inoperative, which may result in serious injury or death in the event of an accident. Never attempt to disassemble or repair the air bag modules.
Any attempt to adapt, re-use or install an air bag module or its components in another vehicle may result in serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants in the event of an accident.
Air Bag Diagnostic Unit (ADU) Installation
WARNING
Do not connect the ADU connector before installing the ADU securely. The shock of installation or pinching the wiring harness between the ADU and its mounting points can cause the air bags to deploy, which may cause serious injury.
1. Install the ADU on the four mounting studs. Install the four nuts and torque to specification.
Torque: 8-12 ft-lbs (1-18 N.M)
2. Connect the wiring harness connector(s) to the ADU.
3. Install the front console and its two mounting screws (one each side).
4. Install the rear console and its four mounting screws (two front, two rear).
5. Perform Diagnosis. Refer to Diagnosis (Multi-point) or Diagnosis (Single-point).
