Disassembly and Reassembly

1. Disassemble steering column in order shown in Fig. 6, noting the following:
a. Use a chisel to make a groove in head of steering lock mounting bolts, Fig. 7.
b. Remove steering lock bolts using a screwdriver, then remove steering lock assembly.
2. Inspect steering shaft assembly for column bushing wear. Correct steering shaft length is 23.76-23.84 inches.
3. Inspect intermediate shaft for universal joint looseness, abnormal noise or sticking.
4. Ensure steering lock assembly cable connector does not move when the key is in the Lock position and that it moves freely with key in all other positions.
5. Assemble steering column in reverse order shown in Fig. 6.
6. Install steering lock assembly on jacket, then install new steering lock mounting bolts and tighten until heads break off.
