Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.1. Release fuel pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain engine coolant.
Fig. 8 Cylinder Head Replacement:
4. When removing cylinder head refer to Fig. 8, noting the following:
a. Disconnect brake vacuum hose, fuel hoses, purge control vacuum hose and heater hoses.
b. Disconnect distributor, oxygen sensor, fuel injector, throttle position sensor, idle speed control solenoid valve, ignition coil, engine coolant temperature sender and switch and engine ground cable.
5. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield, then exhaust gas recirculation pipe.
6. Remove transaxle mounting bolt at exhaust manifold, then coolant bypass pipe.
7. Remove timing belt.
8. Remove camshafts.
9. Remove front exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold
10. Remove intake manifold support bracket.
11. Loosen cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in numbered sequence, Fig. 9.
12. Remove head bolts, then the cylinder head and head gasket.

Fig. 11 Accelerator Cable Adjustment:
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply clean engine oil to bolt threads and seat faces.
b. Install new cylinder head gasket.
c. Install cylinder head bolts.
d. Using sequence shown in Fig. 10, torque cylinder head bolts in two or three steps to 56-60 ft. lbs.
e. Install accelerator cable.
f. Accelerator cable deflection should be 0.04-0.12 inches. If not, adjust by turning nut A, Fig. 11.
g. Tighten front exhaust pipe bolts A to 28-31 ft. lbs., bolt B to 14-18 ft. lbs., and bolt C 7-12 ft. lbs.,
h. Fill radiator with specified amount and type of engine coolant.
i. Start engine and check engine oil and engine coolant for leakage.
j. Check ignition timing and idle speed, then check operation of emission control system.
k. Recheck engine coolant levels.
