Steering: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 1 Power Steering System Pressure Inspection:

1. Install power steering gauge set tool No. K94A-5100-PS1 and adapter tool Nos. K94A-5100-PS2 and K94A-5100-PS3, or equivalents, as shown in Fig. 1, noting the following:
a. Before disconnecting pressure hose, make marks at connections for proper installation.
b. Bleed air from system.
2. Open gauge valve fully. Start engine and turn steering wheel fully left and right to raise fluid temperature to 122-140°F.
3. Close gauge valve completely, then increase engine speed to 1000-5000 RPM.
4. Measure fluid pressure generated by pump. If pressure is below 0.067 psi, replace power steering pump assembly.
5. If valve is left closed for more than 15 seconds, fluid temperature will increase excessively and damage the pump.
6. Fully open gauge valve and increase engine speed to 1000-5000 RPM.
7. Turn steering wheel to left and right stops, then measure fluid pressure generated by gear housing. If pressure is less than 1067 psi, replace gear housing assembly.
8. Remove gauge set. Install and tighten high-pressure hose to 12-17 ft. lbs.
9. Bleed air from system.
