SUBJECT:
Air Bag Diagnostic Unit (ADU) Warning

This service bulletin provides information related to the Air Bag Diagnostic Unit (ADU) installed in Sephia and Sportage vehicles.

The Air Bag system used in all Sportage and 1/96 production and later Sephia models are the single-point-sensing type. The Air Bag Sensor and Air Bag Safing Sensor are located within the ADU to reduce the number of individual components required for the Air Bag-SRS. Reducing the number components, and eliminating their required wiring, further reduces the possibility of a malfunction occurring within the Air Bag-SRS. Because of this, it is extremely important to exercise caution when handling the ADU during service/system diagnosis.

Handling the ADU with the ADU connector attached is extremely dangerous because if the ADU is jarred or bumped, the Air Bags could deploy.

WARNING
Never unbolt the ADU with the connector attached and the key in the ON position. Severe bodily injury or death could occur.

Before disconnecting Air Bag-SRS components, turn the ignition switch to LOCK, disconnect the battery (negative terminal first), and wait 10 minutes for the back-up power supply to discharge.

Always disconnect the ADU connector and have the key out of the ignition prior to removing the ADU.

Also, never plug the ADU connector into the ADU unless the ADU is securely bolted into the vehicle.
