Engine: Service and Repair
NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined in Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery and battery tray.

3. Remove air cleaner housing and air intake tube from throttle body, Fig. 2.
4. Disconnect mass air flow sensor (MAF) electrical connector, Fig. 2.
5. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect accelerator cable and automatic transaxle control cable.
6. Remove both left and right splash shields.
7. Drain engine cooling and transaxle oil.
8. Remove upper and lower radiator hose, then coolant reservoir hose.
9. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle cooler lines.
10. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector, then remove radiator fan assembly.
11. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached.
12. Position power steering pump away from engine and secure with wire.
13. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached.
14. Position compressor away from engine and secure with wire.
15. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
a. Two terminal connector and ring terminal connector at generator.
b. Oil pressure switch.
c. Heated oxygen sensor.
d. Throttle position sensor.
e. Bypass idle air control valve and EGR control valve.
f. Main injector harness.
g. Distributor connectors.
h. Engine coolant temperature sensor and sender.
16. Disconnect brake vacuum hose, purge control vacuum hose.
17. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel injector rail, noting the following:
a. Cover hose with rag to prevent fuel spraying out when disconnecting.
b. Plug disconnected hoses to avoid fuel leakage.
18. Disconnect purge solenoid and cruise control vacuum hoses.
19. Push heater retainer and remove heater hoses at bulkhead. Do not lose heater hose joint O-ring and spacer during removal.
20. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect A/T shifter cable, transmission range switch and solenoid valve harness connector.
21. Disconnect grounds straps at top rear of transaxle and cylinder head to body.
22. Lift vehicle and suitably support.
23. Remove driver side wheel and tire assembly.
24. Remove intake manifold support bracket, then starter electrical connectors and starter.
25. Remove front four exhaust pipe mounting nuts at exhaust manifold.
26. Disconnect RH and LH tie rods at steering knuckles.
27. Disconnect sway stabilizer at both ends.
28. Remove ball joint pinch bolt, then separate ball joints from steering knuckle and swing control arms down.
29. Using a suitable screwdriver, pry left driveshaft from transaxle.
30. Remove driveshaft support bracket at engine block, then driveshaft.
31. Using a suitable engine hoist support engine.

32. Remove the fasteners, Figs. 3 through 6, in following sequence:
a. Remove two nuts from No. 2 engine mount, then two nuts from No. 1 engine mount.
b. Remove four bolts and three nuts from No. 4 engine mount bracket, then remove engine mount and bracket.
c. Remove one bolt from No. 3 mount.
33. Lift engine and transaxle out as a unit.
34. Separate engine from transaxle.
35. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification.
b. Install engine mount rubber with new washer, then install bolt while aligning engine location and tighten to specifications.
