Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
3. Remove transaxle.

4. On models with manual transaxle, using a flywheel locking tool, remove clutch cover, clutch disc and flywheel, Fig. 39.
5. On models with automatic transaxle, using a flywheel locking tool or equivalent, remove drive plate, adapter, and backing plate, Fig. 39.

6. Remove rear cover, Fig. 40.
7. Using a suitable prying tool, pry old seal from rear cover.
8. Apply small amount of clean engine oil to lip of new oil seal.

9. Apply sealer to mounting surface, then install rear cover, Fig. 41.

10. Using seal installation tool or equivalent and hammer. Drive seal on crankshaft until seal is flush with rear cover surface with a maximum protrusion of 0.02 inches, Fig. 42.
11. On models with manual transaxle, clean sealant from flywheel mounting bolts. If old sealant cannot be removed from bolts replace bolt.
12. On models with automatic transaxle, remove sealant from drive plate mounting bolts. If old sealant cannot be removed from bolts replace bolt.

13. On models with manual transaxle, apply sealant to flywheel bolts, install flywheel using a flywheel locking tool or equivalent. Using sequence shown in Fig. 43, torque flywheel to 71-76 ft. lbs.
14. On models with automatic transaxle, apply sealant to driveplate bolts, install driveplate using a flywheel locking tool or equivalent. Using sequence shown in Fig. 43, torque driveplate bolts to 71-76 ft. lbs.
15. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten all fasteners to specifications.
16. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
