SUBJECT:
SEPHIA - FRONT BRAKE NOISE
This Bulletin provides information about front brake caliper anchor and brake pad changes involving specific Sephia models (refer to VIN range and information provided below).
Some Sephia models produced between May 26, 1995 (VIN KNAFA121XS5230537) and January 10, 1996 (VIN KNAFA1257T5247655) may experience a front brake "squeal" or "groan" noise at low speed during light to moderate braking. The cause of the noise is related to clearance deviations between the front brake caliper anchor and the brake pads.
If you receive a customer complaint concerning brake noise ("squeal" or "groan") in the vehicle production range above, replace the front brake caliper anchors and brake pads using the procedure provided.
Notice:
The information provided in this Bulletin applies only to Sephia models from VIN KNAFA121XS5230537 to VIN KNAFA1257T5247655.
Front Brake Pads and Caliper Anchor Replacement Procedures
1. Raise the vehicle and remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
2. Beginning on one side of the vehicle, carefully remove the spring clip from the front brake caliper.
3. Remove the caliper slide pin covers then loosen and remove the two (2) brake caliper slide pins using a 7 mm allen wrench/socket.
4. Slide the brake caliper out of the anchor then remove the brake pads. Use a suitable wire to suspend the brake caliper assembly.
Notice:
Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang from the brake hose.
5. Using a 14 mm socket, remove the two (2) brake caliper anchor mounting bolts from the steering knuckle then remove the anchor.
6. Install a new brake caliper anchor onto the steering knuckle then reinstall the two (2) anchor bolts and torque the bolts to specification.
Tightening Torque:
33-50 lb-ft. (45-67 N.m)
7. Install new brake pads into the brake caliper assembly then slide the brake caliper (with new pads) into the brake caliper anchor.
Notice:
Ensure that the inboard brake pad is correctly positioned in the brake caliper piston.
8. Lubricate the caliper slide pins with high temperature disc brake grease then reinstall the pins and torque to specifications.
Tightening Torque:
18-22 lb-ft (24-30 N.m)
9. Reinstall the caliper slide pin dust covers then reinstall the spring clip onto the brake caliper assembly.
10. Repeat steps 2 through 9 above for the other side of the vehicle.
11. Reinstall the front wheel and tire assemblies and torque the lug nuts to specification.
Tightening Torque:
65-87 lb-ft (88-118 N.m)
12. Road test the vehicle and check for proper brake operation.
Affected VIN Production Range:
KNAFA121XS5230537 (5/26/95 production) through KNAFA1257T5247655 (1/10/96 production)
