Radio/Stereo: Description and Operation
There are presently four different audio units available from KIA for the Sephia. These units range from a simple AM/FM stereo unit that drives two front speakers up to a more sophisticated AM/FM stereo unit with a cassette player and detachable front face. This unit drives two front plus two rear speakers with a high level of power. The second unit is very similar to the first, adding a cassette player and rear speakers. The third unit varies from the second in appearance, but is electrically similar. The significant difference is its anti-theft feature, which consists of an electrical interlink through the unit's connector to the time and alarm control module. The first two units have no anti-theft feature and the fourth relies on removal of its faceplate for theft protection. All four units us the same wiring harness in the vehicle to connect to power and the speakers. The unit with a detachable faceplate also his an intermediate harness, connected between itself and the vehicle harness, that contains an in-line fuse and noise filter.
In the OFF position, battery voltage is supplied to the audio units via the ROOM fuse at all times to maintain the memory related functions (station presets, etc.) With the ignition switch in the ON or ACC position, voltage is supplied to the radio through the AUDIO fuse.
If the audio unit with the anti-theft feature is disconnected from the vehicles power when the key is out of the ignition, the electronic time and alarm control module will enter an alarm state. This state will last for three minutes, during which time the lights and horn will be pulsed. This unit, when disconnected, will disable itself and will only respond to the inputting of a four digit enabling code. When the correct code is entered, the unit will then regain all of its original functions.
The electronic time and alarm control module is prevented from entering an alarm state by the presence of 12 V on pin 5 (BLU/BLK) of C220. This 12 V is provided by an internal connection in the anti-theft unit between pins 2 and 16. While any of the units are being serviced, an alarm state can be inhibited by jumping pins 3 (BLU/RED) and 4 (BLU/BLK) of C291, or by leaving the key inserted in the ignition. When reinstalling the anti-theft unit, it is important to verify that a jumper is not connected at C291.
To discontinue the alarm before the three minutes are up, simply insert the key into the ignition.
