Transaxle Replacement

NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.

Fig. 6 Transaxle Removal:








1. Remove transaxle in sequence shown, Fig. 6, noting the following:
a. Use suitable transaxle jack to support transaxle during removal.
b. Support engine using support tool No. OK201 170 AAO, or equivalent, before removing engine mounting member.
c. Remove tie rod from knuckle using ball joint removal tool No. OK130 283 021, or equivalent. Ensure to not damage dust seal.
d. Remove clinch bolts from lower arm ball joints, then pull lower arms downward to separate them from knuckles.
e. Separate left driveshaft from transaxle by prying carefully with a suitable prybar inserted between shaft and transaxle case
f. Install differential side gear holder tool No. K94A-4208-AT, or equivalent, to prevent gear misalignment, Fig. 7.





2. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque transaxle to engine bolts to 48-65 ft. lbs.
b. Install new driveshaft end clips. Ensure gap on clip is facing upward during installation, Fig. 8.
c. Tighten stabilizer nut until 0.67-0.75 inch of thread is exposed at end of bolt.
d. Torque tie rod end locknut to 32-41 ft. lbs. and install new cotter pin.
e. Torque mounting member to support bolts to 48-65 ft. lbs. and mounting member to transaxle bolts to 28-38 ft. lbs.
f. Refill transaxle to proper level with M-III or Dexron II-E automatic transaxle fluid.
3. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
