SEPHIA AIR BAG - SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND HANDLING INFORMATION





1995 Sephia LS and CS models with 1.8 liter engines (BPD) are equipped with an Air Bag - Supplemental Restraint System that, in conjunction with front three (3) point seat belts, provides increased protection to front seat occupants (driver and passenger) in the event of a frontal impact. The Air Bag System and components for the Sephia are provided to Kia by TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc. TRW is a world class leader in the development, design and production of Air Bag Systems.

The information in this bulletin relates to important Air Bag Inflator and Module safety instructions and handling procedures.

All of this information is provided to promote safe handling of Air Bag Inflators and Modules. All Service, Parts and Body Shop employees handling Air Bag components, must follow the three (3) steps listed below before handling Air Bag Inflators or Modules:

^ Carefully read this Technical Service Bulletin.

^ View the TRW "Safe, Quality Handling of Air Bag Modules" video.

^ Carefully read the two (2) TRW "Safety Instructions and Handling Information" Manuals.

OVERVIEW

Safety Instructions:

^ Failure to follow all of the WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, safety instructions and procedures that are provided in this Technical Service Bulletin and that are explained in the the two (2) TRW "Safety and Handling Instruction Manuals" and in the TRW "Safe, Quality Handling of Air Bag Modules" video tape, can result in severe personal injury or death.

^ Consider all Air Bags (modules and inflators) to be undeployed.

^ Never disassemble an undeployed inflator unit.

^ Do not cut or tamper with the Air Bag Module wiring harness or connectors.

^ Before servicing Air Bag components, deactivate the Air Bag back-up power supply by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a minimum of 30 minutes.

^ Always wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed Air Bag.

Health Hazard Data:

^ Refer to the appropriate (driver's side or passenger side) Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), located at the back of each of the TRW "Safety Instructions and Handling Information" Manuals.

First Aid

If an Air Bag Module Inflator is ruptured without deployment and/or an individual is exposed to the propellants:

^ By Ingestion: Induce vomiting.

^ Skin Contact: Wash skin with soap and water.

^ Eye Contact: Flush eyes with water for 15 minutes or more.

^ Inhalation: Move the victim to fresh air.

Deployed Air Bag Module Removal

^ Follow all WARNINGS, CAUTIONS and safety instructions outlined in this bulletin and detailed in the "Safety Instructions and Handling Information" Manuals.

^ Remove a deployed Air Bag module using removal procedures outlined in the 1995 Sephia Service Manual.

^ Properly recycle, scrap or dispose of deployed Air Bag Modules in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations.

^ Follow Air Bag Module/Inflator storage procedures provided in the "Safety Instructions and Handling Information" Manuals.

Undeployed Air Bag Module Removal

^ Follow all WARNINGS, CAUTIONS and safety instructions outlined in this bulletin along with those detailed in the "Safety Instructions and Handling Information" Manuals.

^ Disconnect both battery cables (negative battery cable first).

^ Do not cut the Air Bag lead wires.

^ Leave the Air Bag Module disconnected for a minimum of 30 minutes before attempting removal.

^ Remove the undeployed Air Bag module using removal procedures outlined in the 1995 Sephia Service Manual.

^ Follow Air Bag Module/Inflator storage procedures provided in the "Safety Instructions and Handling Information" Manuals.
