Timing Belt: Service and Repair

TIMING BELT REMOVAL - INSPECTION - INSTALLATION
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Jack up the vehicle.

Remove in the order shown in the figure: Refer to Removal Note.
1. P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
2. Generator drive belt.
3. Water pump pulley.
4. Plate.
5. Drive Pulleys.
6. Crankshaft Pulley.
7. Timing belt cover, upper.
8. Timing belt cover, lower.
9. Spark plug wire.
10. Spark plugs.
11. Timing belt.

REMOVAL NOTE:
1. Turn the crankshaft and align the marks.

NOTE: The pin on the pulley boss must face upward.

CAUTION: After setting the marks, do not turn the crankshaft when removing the pulley lock bolt and pulley boss.

2. Remove the timing belt.

NOTE: Mark the timing belt rotation for proper reinstallation.

12. Tensioner.
13. Tensioner spring.

Inspect the Following Parts:
1. Timing belt
2. Timing belt tensioner and spring
3. Timing belt pulley
4. Camshaft pulley

Instal in Reverse Order: Refer to Installation Notes.

INSTALLATION NOTES:
1. Install the tensioner and the tensioner spring.
2. Temporarily secure the tensioner with the spring fully extended.

3. Verify that the timing belt pulley mark is aligned with the timing mark.

4. Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the cylinder head cover mark.

5. Install the timing belt so that there is no looseness at the tension side.

CAUTION: Do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.

6. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise, and align the timing belt pulley mark with the timing mark.
7. Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the cylinder head cover mark. If not aligned, remove the timing belt and repeat from tensioner installation.
8. Loosen the tensioner lock bolt to apply tension to the timing belt.

CAUTION: Be sure not to apply tension other than that of the tensioner spring.

9. Tighten the tensioner lock bolt.

Tightening torque: 14-19 ft.lbs. (19-25 Nm)

10. Turn the crankshaft 2 turns clockwise and verify that the marks are correctly aligned.

11. Check the timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure 22 lbs. (98 N) midway between the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley. If the timing belt deflection is not correct, temporarily secure the tensioner lock bolt so that the spring is fully extended and repeat steps 4-8 above or replace the tensioner spring.

Deflection: 0.43-0.51 in (11.0-13.0 mm) at 22 lbs. (98 N)

Install the crankshaft pulley boss and, using the SST tighten the pulley lock bolt.

Tightening torque: 116-123 ft.lbs. (157-167 Nm)

AFTER INSTALLATION
1. Connect the negative battery cable.
2. Start the engine and check the ignition timing.
