Speed Sensor Recall
Due to a malfunction of the Speed Sensor in some vehicles, Kia is recalling affected 1994 Sephia vehicles. If the Speed Sensor malfunctions, the speedometer and cruise control (if equipped) will not operate. There is no charge to the customer for this repair.
The following Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly Replacement Procedures are provided for Service Campaign 001, (VIN R5201004 through R5208876) Speed Sensor Recall.
VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the hood and check the VIN stamped into the passenger side of the engine compartment bulkhead for a punch mark over the "K".
A. If there is no punch mark over the "K" in the VIN, continue on to "Replacement Procedures" below.
B. If a punch mark exists over the "K" in the VIN the Speed Sensor Recall Campaign has already been completed. DO NOT PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN AGAIN. Advise the customer that the campaign had been previously completed and document this information on all copies of the Repair Order.
NOTE:
The "Claim History by VIN Inquiry" screen on the Kia DCS Warranty System can be used to determine if the campaign has previously been performed. For completed vehicles, the following Kia DCS Warranty System information will be provided:
^ Claim type will be "R"
^ Labor Operation will be "17B2205" or "19B33021" Causal Part Number will be "0K011 55 475"
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES:
1. Place the ignition switch in the "LOCK" position.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Speed Sensor Assembly by depressing the lock tab on the connector, then pull up on the connector.
3. Remove the Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly retaining bolt using a 1/4" drive 10 mm socket and a long extension, then remove the Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly.
NOTE:
Twisting the Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly while pulling up on it will facilitate removal of the assembly.
4. Apply a thin coat of oil on the new Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly "0" Ring.
5. Install the new Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly into the transaxle case by gently pushing and twisting it until it is fully seated in the case.
6. Align the bolt hole in the Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assembly with the threaded hole in the transaxle case.
7. Re-install the retaining bolt and torque it to 6-9 ft/lbs.
CAUTION
Do not over-tighten the bolt.
8. Reinstall the electrical connector.
9. Using a small center punch, place a punch mark on the bulkhead over the first letter "K" of the VIN which is stamped into the passenger side of the engine compartment bulkhead.

NOTE:
Each dealership will automatically be shipped a quantity of parts equal to 100% of affected vehicles in their current inventory and 50% of all affected vehicles they have sold. Additional Speed Sensor/Driven Gear Assemblies (Kits) may be obtained as necessary through the Kia Parts System.
