Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.

1. Release fuel pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain engine coolant.

4. Remove cylinder head in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 8, noting the following:
a. Disconnect brake vacuum hose, fuel hoses, purge control vacuum hose and heater hoses.
b. Disconnect distributor, oxygen sensor, fuel injector, throttle position sensor, idle speed control solenoid valve, ignition coil, engine coolant temperature sender and switch and engine ground cable.
c. Loosen cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in numbered sequence in Fig. 9.
d. Remove head bolts, then the cylinder head.
5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply clean engine oil to bolt threads and seat faces.
b. Install cylinder head bolts.
c. Using sequence shown in Fig. 10, torque cylinder head bolts in two or three steps to 56-60 ft. lbs.
d. Install accelerator cable.
e. Accelerator cable deflection should be 0.04-0.12 inches. If not, adjust by turning nut A, Fig. 11.
f. Fill radiator with specified amount and type of engine coolant.
g. Start engine and check engine oil and engine coolant for leakage.
h. Check ignition time and idle speed, then check operation of emission control system.
i. Recheck engine coolant levels.
6. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
