Charging System: Description and Operation

When the engine is started, the alternator generates alternating current that flows through a series of rectifier diodes and is converted to direct current. The direct current and voltage keeps the battery at full charge and provides power to operate the vehicle's electrical system.

The amount of direct current and voltage from the alternator is controlled by a regulator. If the regulator senses the output is insufficient, it will supply a ground to terminal L, causing the charge indicator to illuminate.
