Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
ACCESSING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODESWhen trouble occurs in the main input or main output devices, inspect for the cause using the data link connector and the malfunction indicator lamp located in the instrument cluster. Failures of each input and output device are indicated and retrieved from the Engine Control Module as diagnostic trouble codes.
1. Locate data link connector at top center of firewall and use jumper wire to connect ENG TEST and ground terminals.
2. On Sportage Models, turn ignition to ON, but do not start engine.
3. On other models, Start and warm engine, then run at 2,000 RPM for 3 minutes.
4. Diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed as a series of long and short flashes on the malfunction indicator lamp.
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INTERPRETATION
The engine control module indicates stored fault code by flashing the malfunction/check engine lamp. Fault codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks and fault codes 10 and above are indicated by long and short blinks. One long blink is equivalent to 10 short blinks. The fault code can be determined by adding the long and short blinks.
CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Diagnostic trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the battery ground cable for at least 20 seconds.
