Engine: Service and Repair
NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined in Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain engine cooling and transaxle oil.
Fig. 3 Engine Replacement:
4. Remove engine in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 3, noting the following:
a. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached. Prevent hose damage.
b. Position pump away from engine, then secure pump with wire.
c. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached. Prevent hose damage.
d. Position compressor away from engine, then secure with wire.

5. Disconnect harness connectors shown in Fig. 4.
6. Disconnect brake vacuum hose, fuel hoses, purge control vacuum hose and heater hoses.
7. Disconnect fuel hoses, noting the following:
a. Cover hose with rag to prevent fuel spraying out when disconnecting.
b. Plug disconnected hoses to avoid fuel leakage.
8. Push heater retainer and remove heater hose. Ensure not to lose heater hose joint O-ring and spacer during removal.
9. On models with manual transaxle, remove release cylinder pipe bracket from transaxle.
10. Position release cylinder away from transaxle for easier removal with hose still connected. Do not damage pipe or hose.
11. Remove cotter pin and loosen nut so that it flushes with ball joint edge. Discard cotter pin.
12. Separate knuckle arm and ball joint with suitable ball joint separation tool.
13. Suspend engine with chain block.
14. Remove No. 1 and No. 2 engine mount nuts.
15. Remove engine mount member bolts and nuts and engine mount member. Ensure engine does not fall when removing member.
16. Remove bolts and nuts at left and right lower arm ball joints.
17. Pull lower arm downward to separate them from the knuckles. Do not damage ball joint dust boots.
18. Separate driveshafts from transaxle by prying with a bar inserted between shaft and case. Do not damage oil seal.
19. Lift engine and transaxle assembly out as a unit. Do not damage any components in engine compartment.
20. Remove intake manifold bracket and starter motor.
21. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect throttle cable.
22. Remove No. 2 engine mount rubber and bracket.
23. Separate engine from transaxle by removing the following:
a. Intake manifold bracket.
b. Starter motor and mounting bracket.
c. Throttle cable.
d. No. 2 engine mount rubber and bracket.
e. Integrated stiffener.
f. Torque converter nuts, if equipped.
g. Transaxle mounting bolts.
24. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification.
b. Install engine mount rubber with new washer, then install bolt while aligning engine location and tighten to specifications.
