THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 18-009-11, DATED FEBRUARY 18, 2011, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION AND NO ASTERISKS HAVE BEEN USED TO HIGHLIGHT REVISIONS.
THIS SERVICE BULLETIN IS ALSO BEING RELEASED AS RAPID RESPONSE TRANSMITTAL (RRT) 11-035. ALL APPLICABLE SOLD AND UN-SOLD RRT VIN's HAVE BEEN LOADED. TO VERIFY THAT THIS RRT SERVICE ACTION IS APPLICABLE TO THE VEHICLE, USE VIP OR PERFORM A VIN SEARCH IN TECHCONNECT. ALL REPAIRS ARE REIMBURSABLE WITHIN THE PROVISIONS OF WARRANTY.
HELP USING THE wiTECH DIAGNOSTIC APPLICATION FOR FLASHING AN ECU IS AVAILABLE BY SELECTING "HELP" THEN "HELP CONTENTS" AT THE TOP OF THE wiTECH DIAGNOSTIC APPLICATION WINDOW.
THE wiTECH SOFTWARE LEVEL MUST BE AT RELEASE 11.03 OR HIGHER TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE.
SUBJECT:
Flash: MIL Illumination U0121 Or U0114
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software, removing fuse 33 from the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) and then reinstalling to reset the PCM.
MODELS:
2011 (MK) Compass / Patroit
2011 (PM) Caliber
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.0L or 2.4L engine (sales codes ECN or ED3) and a automatic transmission (sales code DAV or DAW) built before November 15, 2010.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a MIL illumination. Upon further investigation the Technician may find that Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) U0121 - Lost Communication
With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module or U0114 - Lost Communication With Final Drive Control Module is present or stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Reprogramming the PCM will correct the conditions listed above.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH(TM)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all engine and transmission systems are functioning as designed. If DTC's are present other then the ones listed above record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
If a customer's VIN is listed in VIP or your RRT VIN list, perform the repair. For all other customers that describe the symptom/condition or if the technician finds the DTC, perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
Install a battery charger to ensure battery voltage does not drop below 13.2 volts. Do not allow the charging voltage to climb above 13.5 volts during the flash process.
NOTE:
If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash should be restarted.
1. Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT, Refer To Group 8 - Electrical > Electronic Control Modules - Service Information > Module - Powertrain Control > Standard Procedures > PCM/ECM Programming. After PCM reprogramming, the following must be performed:
a. Clear any DTC's that may have been set in other modules due to reprogramming. The wiTECH application will automatically present all DTCs after the flash and allow the tech to clear them.
2. Remove fuse 33 from the TIPM. Wait 15 seconds.
3. Reinstall fuse 33 into the TIPM.
4. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" and attach it near the VECI label.
