Trunk (Boot Lid)-Repair
Panel Drawing
Trunk (boot lid)
Pre-Repair Activities
None.
Times
Jaguar do not provide repair times, as these are dependent on the type and location of the damage.
Consumables
None.
Mechanical, Electrical and Trim, remove and install:
Remove and install items necessary to gain access to the damaged area of panel.
Panel Tools
Fine tooth panel file
Serrated bump spoon
Steel dolly
Orbital sander-extractor
Hot air tool (optional)
01 The trunk is a bolt on assembly; it can be repaired in place or removed from the vehicle.
Remove MET items as required.
Note: For hot air temperature information refer to Table 1: Aluminium Alloy Attributes.
Define dent area, use fine tooth panel file.
02. In this case hot air is applied to relax the panel:
- Hot air tool is allowed to reach maximum temperature.
- Tool is held 30 mm from panel surface.
- Heat is applied for 10 seconds.
- Panel is worked whilst hot.
Bring the majority of the dent out, use the serrated bump spoon, whilst applying pressure from the back of the panel with the dolly.
File the area again to highlight low spots.
Low spots are worked, use serrated bump spoon, slowly lifting the dent to a uniform level.
03. Repeat the process using heat as required:
1. File to highlight the low spots.
2. Lifting the dent out with the serrated bump spoon.
This will result in a metal finish, with the correct panel profile.
Note: The dent should be worked slowly and carefully.
Caution:
- Do not use excessive force.
- Do not strike the panel excessively.
Both of these actions can cause the panel to stretch.
04. Mechanically sand to 120 grit, use the orbital sander with dust extraction.
On completion of panel replacement, the following checks should be carried out:
1. Panel gaps (as indicated).
2. Hinge operation.
3. Lock alignment.
4. MET operation.
