Lower Wishbone Front Bushing - Change Of Specification - Service Action S499
Remove and destroy Bulletin 204-S499, dated 04/03. Replace with this Bulletin.
Updated information is shown by asterisks and black bars.
Issue:
As a result of ongoing quality improvements, Jaguar Cars has identified an opportunity to address a potential concern on a number of vehicles within the above VIN range, whereby the lower wishbone bushings in the front arms may split.
Analysis has confirmed vehicles manufactured after February 2000 are less likely to exhibit this concern due to manufacturing improvements to parts used from that date. Therefore, this action is only applicable to vehicles within the above VIN range.
The latest specification replacement parts for the wishbone front arm bushings are:
^ XK Series vehicles - MNE 1360CA
^ V8 XJ Series vehicles - MNE 1360BB
*Jaguar Cars is aware that dealers have been using the rear wishbone bushing MNE 1360BB in place of MNE 1360AB in the Front Lower Wishbone on V8 XJ vehicles for some time. If, after inspection of the vehicle, it is determined that MNE 1360BB is already in place, replacement is not required.*
*On XK vehicles you should check DDW or any other Warranty/Service information that you have access to, to ensure that the front arm bushings have not already been replaced with the latest level parts (MNE 1360CA) prior to carrying out this Service Action.*
Note:
This Service Action details the *inspection and possible* replacement of both wishbone front arm bushings. This policy applies to vehicles affected by this Service Action only.
Action:
To ensure that the performance of the front lower wishbone bushings on the vehicles within the above VIN ranges is maintained to the latest level, *inspect and, if necessary*, replace the lower wishbone front arm bushings at the *next service opportunity*.
*VISUAL INSPECTION OF BUSHINGS
To be carried out on XJ Series vehicles only to identify the level of bushing fitted.*
*Note:
This method cannot be used on XK vehicles since the MNE 1360BB and MNE 1360CA bushing cannot be distinguished visually.*
1. *Raise vehicle on ramp.
2. Inspect the front wishbone bushings. A raised circular rib around the circumference of the center steel core identifies the MNE 1360BB level bushing (Illustration 1).
Note:
If the MNE 1360BB level bushing is installed, no further action is required. If any other level of bushing is installed, continue with the procedure below to install MNE 1360BB level bushings.*
BUSHING REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disassemble the front suspension as necessary, as detailed in JTIS, Section 204, *SRO 60.35.45 for XK vehicles, SRO 60.35.56 for V8 XJ Series vehicles. If removing steel-cased bushings continue procedure with step 2 below*.
2. Make 2 saw cuts through the rubber and *partly* into the flange of the steel casing, at the locations shown in Illustration 2, in line with the casing of the bush.
*Caution:*
Do *not* cut *fully* through the steel flange. The sawcuts should penetrate through only 75 - 80 % of the thickness of the steel flange, so that the saw blade does not contact the wishbone arm.
3. Use a hammer and chisel, or similar hand-tool, to bend the "half-moons" of the flange away from the wishbone arm.
*Caution:
Ensure that the wishbone arm is not nicked by hand tools used in this operation. If using a vise to hold the arm, use soft jaws*.
Use pliers or grips to repeatedly bend the "half-moons" back and forth until the "half-moons" break off along the line of the saw cuts.
Position the wishbone arm on the support plates of the hydraulic press, so that the bushed end is supported by the plates where the "half-moons" have been removed. This will allow the casing of the displaced bush to pass between the support plates (Illustration 3).
4. Using Special Tool 204-214, press the bush from the bore in the wishbone arm.
INSTALLATION OF STEEL-CASED BUSHINGS
1. Follow the existing procedures shown in JTIS, *with the following change: V8 XJ Series*
- Use Special Tool 204-279 (rear arm bushing installer) when pressing in the bushing for the front arm of the lower wishbone, since the same bushing as in the rear arm is now used in both arms.
*XK*
- Use Special Tool 204-280 (front arm bushing installer) when pressing in the bushing for the front arm of the lower wishbone.
2. Refer to JTIS, Section 204, SRO 60.35.32 for reassembly.
*Note:*
Repair policy requires the replacement of the parts listed in the parts section.
Parts Information
Warranty Information
Warranty claims should be submitted quoting the information found in the table. This will result in payment of the stated time and, where applicable parts/miscellaneous expense codes as listed.
Drive in/drive out may only be claimed when the vehicle has been brought in for this action alone to be undertaken.
Use S499 as the program code with the relevant option code and *also enter* the SRO(s) and parts details on the claim applicable to the repair completed.
Note:
Always review a Vehicle's Claim History within DDW first to determine whether this service action has been previously performed on a specific vehicle. The "Review Claim History" function will display a list of claims against the vehicle. If this service action appears in the program code field, do not perform this service action.
