Removal

CAUTION: Replacement of nuts and bolts: Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

1. Raise rear of vehicle and support on stands.

2. Remove rear wheel.

CAUTION: Do not suspend caliper from brake hose as this will damage the hose.

3. Remove brake caliper from carrier.
- Remove caliper spring clip.
- Remove guide pin dust caps.
- Slacken and withdraw guide pins.
- Remove caliper from carrier and tie to suspension mounting bracket.

4. Disconnect wheel speed sensor connector.

5. Remove and discard tie strap securing wheel speed sensor harness to brake hose clip.

6. Mark wishbone at pivot pin eccentric flange marker to aid installation.

7. Remove pivot pin nut and washer.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to parking brake cable, the hub carrier must be supported on removal from wishbone.

8. Remove hub carrier from wishbone
- Remove pivot pin from hub carrier.
- Withdraw hub carrier and support carrier on block of wood.

CAUTION: Note position of shims during removal. They must be returned to their original position during installation.

9. Noting their positions, remove shim from each end of pivot pin sleeve.

WARNING: ENSURE THE SPECIAL TOOLS ARE POSITIONED DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE ON THE SPRING AND THE ARMS ARE CORRECTLY SEATED.

WARNING: WHEN COMPRESSING THE SPRING, TIGHTEN THE SPECIAL-TOOL ADJUSTMENT BOLTS EVENLY.

10. Compress spring.
- Fit and align special tools 204-179 diametrically opposite on spring.
- Evenly tighten special tool tensioning bolts to compress spring.

11. Remove shock absorber to wishbone mounting nut and bolt.

12. Remove nuts securing shock absorber/spring upper mounting to body.

13. Using special tools 204-179-1, secure upper mounting to spring.

14. Using a jack, retract shock absorber through wishbone aperture.

15. Position a bolt through the spring coils and shock absorber lower-bush, to temporarily locate shock absorber.

16. Partially lower jack for access to top of shock absorber.

17. Adaptive damping system only:
- Disconnect shock absorber harness connector by pressing lugs down and pulling connector up.

18. Lower and remove jack.

19. Remove shock absorber/spring assembly from vehicle and place assembly on work bench.

20. With assistance, manually compress shock absorber and withdraw bolt from spring coils.

21. Remove shock absorber from upper mounting.
- Use a spanner on shock absorber shaft flats to prevent rotation (wrench in end socket on adaptive damping).
- Slacken and remove shock absorber upper retaining nut.
- Withdraw shock absorber from spring.

22. Remove special tools 204-179-1 securing upper mounting to spring.

23. For installation purposes, mark position of tool arms on spring.

CAUTION: The type and number of packers fitted to rear springs is dependent upon spring rating. Some springs are fitted without any packers. The original packer(s) must therefore be retained on removal.

24. Withdraw spring from upper mounting.
- Retain lower isolator.
- Retain spring pan upper.
- If fitted, retain packer.

WARNING: WHEN RELEASING SPRING TENSION, SLACKEN THE SPECIAL-TOOL ADJUSTMENT BOLTS EVENLY.

25. Evenly slacken adjuster bolts on tools 204-179 and remove tools from spring.

Installation

WARNING: ENSURE THE SPECIAL TOOLS ARE POSITIONED DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE ON THE SPRING AND THE ARMS ARE CORRECTLY SEATED.

WARNING: TIGHTEN SPECIAL TOOL ADJUSTMENT BOLTS EVENLY WHEN COMPRESSING SPRING.

1. Using Special tools compress spring. 204-179.
- Transfer reference marks from old spring to replacement spring.
- Fit and align arms of special-tools to spring reference marks.
- Tighten special-tool adjustment bolts evenly to compress spring.

2. Install spring in upper mounting.
- Position spring isolator in upper mounting and packer (if fitted) in upper mounting.
- Position spring pan in isolator.
- Install packer if required.

3. Ensuring correct orientation, secure upper mounting to spring using special tools.

4. Position shock absorber in spring/upper mounting assembly.
- Ensure that gaiter locating collar, washer, spacer and lower isolator are correctly positioned on shock absorber.
- Position shock absorber in spring/upper mounting.

5. Secure top of shock absorber.
- Install spring upper isolator.
- Install upper washer.
- Fit but do not tighten locknut on shock absorber.

6. Manually retract shock absorber and place a bolt through spring coils and shock absorber lower-bush.

7. Secure shock absorber to upper mounting.
- Fit a spanner on shock absorber shaft flats to prevent rotation (wrench in socket on adaptive damping). Tighten shock absorber upper lock nut to 30 - 40 Nm (16-18 Nm on adaptive damping).

8. Position shock absorber/spring assembly to vehicle.

9. With assistance, manually retract shock absorber and remove temporary securing bolt.

10. Remove special tools securing upper mounting to spring. JD 199-1.

11. Align shock absorber lower bush to wishbone and fit mounting bolt.

12. If adaptive damping is fitted:
Connect shock absorber harness connector, ensuring connector key locates in socket keyway.

13. Seat upper mounting in body location.
If adaptive damping is installed, ensure harness is correctly positioned

14. Ensuring that spring is seated on isolator and spring pan, position upper mounting on body studs.

15. Ensure that rubber pigtail spring seat is correctly positioned in wishbone.

16. Release spring tension.
Ensuring that spring is correctly located, evenly slacken adjuster bolts on special tools 204-179.
17. Remove special tools 204-179.

18. Fully seat and secure upper mounting to body.
Ensure upper mounting is correctly seated in body location.
Install nuts securing upper mounting to body studs and tighten to 17-23 Nm.
