Cruise Control: Description and Operation



Vehicle Speed Control System
The Vehicle Speed Control system offers the driver relaxed vehicle cruising by enabling a pre-set constant vehicle speed to be maintained without driver operation of the accelerator pedal.







Vehicle Speed Control is activated by an ON/OFF master switch adjacent to the 'Sport mode switch in the 'J' gate surround. An integral red light illuminates when the system is activated.







A steering wheel mounted four button control pad provides for driver increase (+) or decrease (-) of set vehicle speed, suspension of system operation with set speed memorised (CANCEL) and resumption of operation at memorised vehicle speed (RESUME). The selected vehicle speed is displayed in the message center. The vehicle speed control system will not operate below 26 km/h (16 mph).

The set vehicle speed can be increased or decreased in 2 km/h (1 mph) increments by briefly pressing the (+) or (-) control button up to a maximum of five times. Alternatively, the (+) or (-) button can be pressed and held until the required vehicle speed is displayed in the message center.

Adaptive Vehicle Speed Control

Operation
On vehicles for certain markets, an adaptive speed control system is installed as an option. In addition to the normal vehicle speed control functions, this system enables a preset distance to be maintained behind a moving vehicle immediately ahead, without driver intervention.







As on the standard speed control system, adaptive speed control is activated by an ON/OFF master switch in the 'J' gate surround and an integral red light illuminates when the system is activated. In addition to the four steering wheel mounted speed control buttons in the standard speed control system, two buttons provide for increasing (<--->) or reducing (<->) the time gap to be maintained from the vehicle ahead On adoption of the 'follow mode', a symbol illuminates in the instrument cluster to indicate the system is in operation, and the relative time gap between vehicles is displayed in the message center for four seconds. The vehicle then maintains the pre-selected time gap between vehicles until the vehicle ahead either accelerates to a speed above that pre-set, moves out of lane or out of view, or slows until automatic 'low speed switch-off occurs.

Components

In addition to the standard vehicle speed control system, the Adaptive Speed Control system comprises:







An adaptive speed control, control module (adaptive SCCM) incorporating a radar sensor and yaw rate sensor provides system control functions. The SCCM is installed in a mounting bracket located in a central cut-out in the body front upper cross member. A bracket supporting the rear of the sensor together with a spirit level, provide for vertical alignment of the unit.







An adaptive speed control booster control module (SCBCM) installed inboard of the brake booster within the driver side false bulkhead. This is connected to the brake booster pressure switches and solenoid valve, and the vehicle CAN system, by two short harnesses.







A speed control brake booster (SCB) assembly incorporating a solenoid operated air control valve and two pressure switches. The SCB is connected to the booster control module by a single harness connector.







A six button driver control pad on the steering wheel. In addition to the normal cruise control functions two buttons facilitate setting of the desired distance to be maintained from vehicles ahead.
