Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems: Service and Repair

BLEED PROCEDURE

NOTE: An assistant will be required to help with the bleeding procedure.

1. Raise the vehicle and support securely.
2. Remove the dust caps from all four bleed nipples.
3. Bleed the system in the following order:
a) Front left hand caliper.
b) Front right hand caliper.
c) Rear left hand caliper.
d) Rear right hand caliper.





4. Remove the master cylinder filler cap and ensure that the reservoir is full before bleeding. Periodically check fluid level to make sure no air is drawn in while performing bleeding procedure. Fluid level in the reservoir must always remain above the "minimum" level.





5. Connect a hose to the left hand front caliper bleed nipple and submerge the open end in container of clean brake fluid.
a) Locate a wrench on the bleed nipple.
b) Connect a bleed hose and bottle to the bleed nipple.
c) Partly unscrew the bleed nipple.





6. Operate the brake pedal to start bleeding.
a) Operate the pedal approximately twenty times through its full travel.
b) Pause for two seconds at the end of each return stroke to allow for priming.
c) The fluid level in the reservoir must always remain above the "minimum" level.
d) Clear, bubble-free fluid will indicate that that part of the system is bled.
7. Tighten the bleed nipple with the brake pedal in the fully applied position.
8. Operate the brake pedal to build up pressure.
a) Operate the pedal a further three to five times.
b) Open and close the bleed nipple.
9. Disconnect and remove the bleed hose, bottle and wrench.
10. Ensure that the fluid reservoir is full.
11. Repeat the complete procedure for the three remaining calipers.
12. Ensure that the reservoir fluid level is correct and install the filler cap.
13. Install the dust caps on bleed nipples.
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Start the engine so that the vacuum booster is operational.
16. Check the brake pedal travel and feel.
17. Switch the ignition "OFF".
