Sound Proofing / Insulation: Description and Operation
Sealing
Introduction
The term 'sealing' covers the use of a wide variety of materials in vehicle manufacture.
Many products remain mastic throughout their life while others harden but remain elastic. Their purpose ranges from
- NVH sound deadening improvement characteristics using products such as sound deadening pads and foam cavity injection.
- Anti chip coating to nullify/reduce the harmful effect of stone chip damage to exterior and underbody areas. An 800-1000 g/m sq PVC coating is applied to the underside of the main floor, trunk floor and wheel arches.
- Panel jointing sealants to prevent moisture/dust ingress and corrosion. PVC bead seal is applied to door, hood and trunk clinch joints.
- Cavity waxes to assist in the prevention of corrosion. Medium solids black pigmented wax is applied to vehicle undersides. High solids wax is injected to critical body box section and re flowed at 70-90 degree C. to achieve optimum seam/joint penetration.
Body technicians should pay particular attention to the correct re-instatement of these products in order to preserve both the life of the vehicle and Jaguar quality objectives.
