Seat Belt Pretensioners - Handling Precautions

Issue:

Warning:
Personal injury car result from inadvertent triggering of pyrotechnic pre-tensioning systems incorporated in the front seat belt mechanisms on the above models. If incorrectly handled, particularly during bodywork repair operations, the mechanism could be inadvertently triggered, which would cause any extended length of seat belt to be retracted abruptly into the reel mechanism.

Action:

Handling precautions by model are outlined below.

V8 XJ Series

The pyrotechnic deployment mechanism is electrically actuated.

Warning:
Disconnect the vehicle battery and wait at least 1 minute to deactivate the airbag/SRS. When handling a pretensionser unit that has been removed from a vehicle, ensure that the piston housing is not pointed toward anyone. Any pretensioning unit which is dropped from a height greater than 0.3 meters (12 inches) must not be used.

Unactivated pretensioning units contain a solid flammable material.

XK8 MODELS

The front seat belt pretensioners are deployed by a mechanical device, normally sensitive to violent deceleration of the vehicle, as would occur under certain road traffic accident situations. The possibility exists that this mechanism could be triggered unintentionally by certain workshop operations, particularly during bodywork repair.

Warning:
Always disarm the front seat belt mechanisms before attempting bodywork repairs that involve hammering, or other violent shock movements, to the body sheet metal. Unintentional operation of the seat belt pre-tensioning mechanism will then be inhibited.

The seat belt pre-tensioning mechanism must be disarmed and armed if the seat belt reel assembly is removed and reinstalled.

DISARMING PROCEDURE - XK8 MODELS

1. Remove the trim covering the seat belt reel assembly.

2. Remove the two screws (arrowed in Illustration 1) and the seat belt guide bracket.

3. Use a Torx 30 drive bit to unscrew, and remove the gold arming pin (Illustration 2). Discard the arming pin. The seat belt assembly is now disarmed.

4. To rearm the assembly, install a new arming pin and torque to 10 Nm (7 lb. ft.).
