Instruments - Horn Has Poor Sound Quality

Horns - Poor Sound Quality/Failure - Install Modified Horn And Bracket Assembly

Issue:

On some 2001-02 MY XK vehicles within the above VIN range, customers may complain of poor sound quality, or failure, of one or both horns. This concern can be caused by water ingress. A modified horn and bracket assembly can be installed in a revised position to minimize the risk of water ingress.

Action:

In case of a customer complaint on a 2001-02 MY XK vehicle within the above VIN range, install a modified horn and bracket assembly as follows:

INSTALLING MODIFIED HORN ASSEMBLY

1. Open hood and fit fender protectors.

2. Record customer preferences as described in Technical Bulletin 414-01.

3. Open luggage compartment - remove battery cover and disconnect battery.

4. Raise vehicle and support on stands.

5. Remove front wheels (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 204-04, SRO 74.20.05).

6. Remove front bumper cover (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 501-19, SRO 76.22.28).





7. Install new horn and bracket assembly to new position on body cross-member (Illustration 1).





8. Install and fully tighten new horn and bracket assembly securing bolt (Illustration 2).

9. Disconnect electrical connectors from original horns.





10. Remove original left hand horn securing screw and remove horn (Illustration 3).





11. Remove original right hand horn securing screw (Illustration 4) and retain for further use, and remove horn.

Note:
The right horn securing screw is also used to secure ambient air temperature sensor.

12. Cut and remove the existing electrical connectors from the horn branch harness cables.

13. Strip back the outer casing approximately 8 mm from the cut end of the left hand horn branch harness cables.

14. Strip back the outer casing approximately 8 mm from the end of the electrical fly lead cables for the new horn and bracket assembly.

15. Install butt splice connectors from the Harness Repair Kit 418-5065 to the stripped cables of the new fly lead.

Note:
Refer to harness repair guide to determine the correct butt splice connector.

16. Crimp butt splice connectors to the stripped cables of the new fly lead.

17. Place heat shrink sleeves from the Harness Repair Kit over cables of new fly lead.

Note:
Refer to harness repair guide to determine the correct diameter heat shrink sleeves.

18. Insert the cut and stripped ends of left hand horn branch harness cables into the opposing ends of the butt splice connectors.

19. Crimp the butt splice connectors to the cut and stripped cables of the left hand horn branch harness.

20. Center the heat shrink sleeves over the butt splice connectors.





21. Use a suitable heat source, shrink sleeves onto butt splice connectors and electrical cables (Illustration 5).





22. Route new electrical fly lead (Illustration 6).

23. Connect fly lead electrical connector to new horn assembly.

24. Install heat shrink sleeves three quarters of the way over cut ends of right hand horn branch harness cables.

Note:
Refer to harness repair guide to determine the correct diameter heat shrink sleeves.

25. Using suitable heat source, shrink sleeves onto electrical cables.

Note:
During previous operation, squeeze ends of heat shrink sleeves to seal before glue sets.

26. Fold and tape back right hand horn branch harness sleeved cables to vehicle harness.





27. Install the ambient air temperature sensor (Illustration 7) to original right hand horn mounting point using original securing screw retained in step 11.

28. Install front bumper cover (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 501-19, SRO 76.22.28).

29. Install front wheels (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 204-04 SRO 74.20.05).

30. Lower vehicle from stands.

31. Remove fender protectors and close hood.

32. Connect battery and install battery cover.

33. Reset customer preferences as described in Technical Bulletin 414-01.

34. Close luggage compartment.
