Driveshaft Universal Joint Bolts - Revised Torque Specification - Service Action S822

Issue:

A revised torque specification for the nuts and bolts that secure the rear universe joint flange of the drive shaft to the differential pinion flange has been introduced in production from VIN 022126. In addition "Loctite" thread-locking compound is applied to the bolt threads during vehicle assembly.

Action:

Apply "Loctite" to the bolt threads on all XK8 vehicles, within the above VIN Range, that are not marked with green paint, and retighten the nuts to the revised torque setting.

Perform this action at the next routine service visit, or sooner in case of a customer complaint of a "click" or "clunk" noise, particularly when changing from Drive to Reverse or from Reverse to Drive.

PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, leaving the vehicle with the handbrake off and the selector lever in N.

2. Mark the universe joint flange and the differential coupling flange so that the two components can be realigned during reassembly.

3. Remove the nuts at the drive shaft to differential pinion flange coupling.

4. Separate the joint flanges and remove the four bolts. Rest the shaft on the handbrake relay lever support bracket.

5. Wipe the bolt threads with a clean lint-free cloth. Also wipe clean the mating faces of the coupling flanges.

6. Reassemble the coupling flanges to their original position, as marked in step 2 above, by inserting the bolts in their locations.

7. Apply Loctite Grade 270 generously to the threads of each bolt.

8. Reinstall the existing nuts and fully tighten them, using a "Snap-on" (R) drive adaptor FRDHM 13 or equivalent (sourced locally), modified as fully detailed in JTIS Section 205-01, SRO 47.15.01, together with a suitable torque wrench.

Torque Setting for bolts: 67 Nm (50 lb ft)

Ensure that the torque wrench setting required to achieve this torque at the nuts is calculated for the individual torque wrench in use. Information is detailed in JTIS Section 205-01, SRO 47.15.01, and also in Technical Bulletin 100-03.

9. Apply a stripe of green paint across each nut and the threads of the bolt. This will indicate that the bolts have be retorqued to the new specification. Any future breakage of the paint film will indicate move of the nuts on the threads.

10. Lower the hoist.

Parts Information:

NOTE:
For this service action, the Loctite is prorated at 10% with a handling credit of 40%.
