Intermittent Illumination of Instruments/False Warning Messages - Harness Connector Latch
Issue:
Some 1998 MY XK8 and V8 XJ Series vehicles within the above VIN ranges may experience intermittent illumination of the instruments and/or erroneous warning messages. The fault may be caused by a defective retaining latch in the Instrument Pack harness connector (arrowed, illustration 1).
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of erratic illumination of the Instrument Pack and/or erroneous warning messages, on a vehicle within the above VIN range, proceed as follows:
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. On V8 XJ Series vehicles, remove the veneer finisher. On XK8 vehicles, lower the underscuttle.
2. On all vehicles, gently move the harness wires at a position near the connector. If the connector has not latched into position correctly, some movement of the connector in the Instrument Pack will be noticeable.
3. With the ignition switched on, move the harness to check for the erratic illumination of the Instrument Pack.
Note:
Do not use excessive force, which could damage the integrity of the wiring, when checking the connector location.
4. If the connector cannot be latched securely, replace the instrument pack. Contact the Zone Parts Department to order an instrument pack.
