Replacement

NOTE:
^ During use, a small amount of surplus grease may appear around the bearing seal but this does not indicate a failed bearing or seal. The grease should not be removed as this will act as an additional barrier to the ingress of water or foreign matter.
^ Excessive end float or bearing rumble will indicate a failed bearing; maximum permissible end float is 0.13 mm. Take care not to confuse suspension ball joint or upper or lower fulcrum bush movement for bearing end float.
^ If the hub is removed for any reason, a new bearing assembly must be installed. Never attempt to re-use a bearing.

REMOVAL, FRONT
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
3. Disconnect the ABS sensor harness connector.
4. Remove the brake caliper assembly, refer to Brakes and Traction Control.

CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang unsupported on the brake hose.

5. Remove the brake rotor from the wheel lug studs.
6. Remove the outer tie rod joint, refer to Steering and Suspension.
7. Remove the upper wishbone to vertical link ball joint, refer to Steering and Suspension.
8. Remove the lower wishbone to vertical link ball joint, refer to Steering and Suspension.

9. Remove the Hub/ABS rotor nut as follows:
a. Release the spring pin.
b. Unscrew the Hub/ABS rotor nut, using socket tool No. JD228 and holding tool No. JD 227, or equivalents.

10. Remove the hub from the bearings as follows:
a. Place the vertical link assembly on the special supporting tool No. JD225, or equivalent.
b. Using a suitable press, and press tool JD224, or equivalent, press the hub from the bearings.

11. Press the bearing assembly from the vertical link as follows:
a. Remove & discard the inboard circlip.
b. Position the press bearing removal tool No. JD237, or equivalent, on the bearing inner cone.
c. Press the bearing assembly from the vertical link.
d. Discard the bearing assembly.
12. Clean the vertical link bearing bore.
13. Clean the hub bearing diameter.

NOTE: Do not use abrasives.

INSTALLATION

1. Install a new outboard circlip in the groove of the vertical link.

CAUTION:
^ When installing the bearing circlips in the vertical link ensure that the ears are located at the lowest position to permit water drainage.
^ To achieve this, a perpendicular line drawn through the suspension upper ball joint will indicate the position of the gap between the circlip ears.
^ This procedure makes an allowance for the caster angle prior to installing the vertical link.

2. Press a new bearing assembly into the vertical link as follows:
a. Support the outboard face of the vertical link.
b. Press in the bearing assembly from the rear of the vertical link using the bearing installation press tool No. JD 238, or equivalent, on the bearing outer ring.
c. Ensure that the bearing is fully seated by applying a three tons seating load.
3. Using blunt nosed circlip pliers tool No. 18G-1004, or equivalent, install the inboard circlip in the groove of the vertical link.

CAUTION:
^ Do not allow the nose of the pliers to protrude beyond the circlip as this may damage the integral bearing seal.
^ The ears of the circlip must be located in the lowest position to permit water drainage.

4. Install the hub into the bearing assembly as follows:
a. Using suitable tools, support the bearing inner cone from the rear of the vertical link.
b. Install the hub into the bearing assembly.
c. Ensure that the hub is fully seated by applying a three tons seating load.

5. Install the Hub/ABS rotor nut using the Hub/ABS rotor socket.
a. Screw on the Hub/ABS rotor nut and tighten to specification.
b. Install a new spring pin in the hole closest to the hub/ABS rotor castellation slots.

NOTE: Do not unscrew the nut to allow spring pin engagement

c. If required, continue to tighten the nut until the spring pin engages into the castellation slot.
6. Install the lower wishbone to vertical link ball joint and tighten the securing nut to specification.
7. Install the upper wishbone to vertical link ball joint and tighten the securing nut to specification.
8. Install the outer tie rod joint.
9. Install the brake rotor on the wheel lug studs.
10. Install the brake caliper assembly.
11. Reconnect the ABS sensor harness connector.
12. Lower the vehicle.
