MODEL
1998 MY-ON XK8 Range

VIN
018108-018384

Issue:

Some 1998 MY XK8 vehicles within the above VIN range may experience the air bag malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) remaining lit with DTC B1944 or B1945 stored in the Airbag/SRS Control Module. This condition can be caused by poor grounding of the impact sensors. The vehicle may have been assembled using plain bolts instead of the correct paint-cutting bolts for retaining the impact sensors.

Action:

In case a 1998 MY XK8 vehicle, within the above VIN range, exhibits the air bag MIL remaining lit, with DTC B1944 or B1945 stored in the Airbag/SRS Control Module, proceed as shown:

1. Disconnect the battery. Open the hood and cover the fenders.

2. Raise the the vehicle and remove the front wheels and the front bumper cover.

3. Remove one sensor (Illustration 1). Using a 6 x 1.00 mm tap, clean out the 2 threads on the sensor and the 1 thread on the body. Clean away any paint chips.

4. Reinstall the sensor and repeat for the sensor on the opposite side.

5. Reinstall the front bumper cover and the wheels. Remove the fender covers and close the hood.

6. Reconnect the battery and reset the clock.

7. Carry out the procedure for Engine Control Module (ECM) Adaptation described in XK8 Technical Bulletin 414-01.

8. Use the PDU to clear all stored DTCs. Select GUIDED DIAGNOSTICS, BODY SYSTEMS, DIAGNOSTICS, AIR BAG. (Do not use TOOLBOX.)
