Late 1998 MY Product Update - Running Changes to Vehicle Specification

Issue:

A supercharged model (XKR) has been introduced in other markets except North America. There are a number of changes which carry over to the normally aspirated version of the vehicle (from VIN 024687) which affect all markets. This Technical Bulletin covers these changes.

GENERAL

In order to accommodate the supercharged engine (plus the new transmission unit) and improve cooling characteristics for the XKR vehicle, it has been necessary to modify the body shell as well as some components such as heatshields. Many of those, and other, modifications have been carried back from the supercharged XKR vehicle to normally aspirated vehicles.

BODY

Wind deflectors in front of front wheels have been deleted (as a running change).

HOOD

The hood liner stiffeners have been repositioned.

SUSPENSION

Revised damper characteristics.

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE

An inlet venting tube has been added to the ECM box fan for cooling purposes.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

Mufflers have been modified internally to minimize noise and meet legislation.

ALTERNATOR SUPPRESSOR

For vehicles equipped with the Premium In Car Entertainment Systems the alternator suppressor has been relocated to the front right side of the vehicle, forward of the wheel. It is attached to a bracket which also provides mountings for the battery backed sounder.

FUEL SYSTEM

The fuel pump is carry over from the 1998 MY XJ Series Sedan. The EVAP purge valve has been relocated from under-hood to the carbon canister mounting bracket where it is attached by two mounting bolts.

EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM (MEXICO)

Vehicles for Mexico are now equipped with two carbon canisters and a modified atmospheric venting arrangement (Illustration 1). The canisters and control valves, including the vapor (EVAP) purge valve (A), are mounted on a single bracket to the rear of the left front wheel behind the wheel arch liner. Operation of the vapor purge system is unchanged: vapor inflow from the tank and the purge valve outflow to the engine are shown arrowed.

The vent outlet from the top canister is connected via a three way junction to the atmospheric vent pipe (B) and a new, normally closed, pressure relief valve (C). The vent pipe is open ended and extends to the rear of the vehicle to reduce the possible intrusion of fuel odors. The vent relief valve is identical to the existing tank pressure control valve (D) and is located below it on the canister mounting bracket. If a blockage or water ingress occurs in the main vent pipe, the resulting pressure increase causes the relief valve to open and vent the canisters directly to atmosphere. Note that the vent relief valve does not require a vacuum control feed (E).

IN CAR ENTERTAINMENT

Rear Speakers

New fasteners are introduced on both standard and premium ICE systems on convertibles:

Premium ICE new fasteners JZH 100069 (3) replace the 1997 MY fasteners
JZH 100040 (2) and JSH 106187 (1).

Standard ICE : new fasteners JZH 100069 (2) replace fasteners JXB 10614F.

BADGING

The slanted lettering used previously has been replaced with style more consistent with Sedan vehicles.

FUSES

Fuses for the addition of the supercharger charge air cooler (CAC) coolant pump and the secondary fuel pump have been added to normally aspirated vehicles although they are not used.

RELAYS

In the trunk electrical carrier of convertible vehicles, four black micro-relays replace the larger black relays for left and right side quarter windows, up and down. The door lock and air conditioning isolating relays have been changed to black micro-relays. Left hand and right hand blower relays have been changed to black micro-relays. The door mirror heater relay has been changed to a black micro-relay. The convertible top lower and raise relays have been shifted within the fusebox.
