Jaguar Portable Diagnostic Unit (PDU)

The franchised Jaguar Dealer is equipped with the PDU which is a comprehensive electrical diagnosis system specific to Jaguar vehicles. PDU can interrogate not only the engine management system, but ALL control modules on the vehicle which are similarly connected to the communications bus; it can then decode and display any diagnostic trouble codes including enhanced diagnostic information.

The PDU performs a number of specific functions, including:
- Guided diagnostics
- DataLogger
- Engine Set-up
- Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Control Module Programming
- Digital Multimeter

DataLogger
DataLogger is designed to identify intermittent faults in the vehicle electronics and can capture information from up to three sources simultaneously, i.e. Serial Communications, Vehicle Interfacing and Measurement Probes.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes
This function allows the retrieval of trouble codes, relative to those systems present on the vehicle which support fault code logging.

Engine Set-Up
Engine Set-up allows adjustable engine parameters to be set to the correct criteria.

Control Module Programming
Control Module Programming is used as a setting/calibration process for the security system.

Digital Multimeter (DMM)
A Digital Multimeter enables measurement of voltage, current, resistance, frequency, pulse width, pulse period and duty cycle.





The Jaguar Multi Protocol Adapter (MPA)
In order that the PDU may access the CAN and SCP systems, an adapter is needed to interface between the J1962 socket and the PDU. The MPA is an interpreter for the various data languages present on the vehicle and provides the PDU with a means of receiving and sending data. The MPA also provides a constant charging facility for the PDU Nicad batteries along with those features found in the VBA.

NOTE: The MPA is not required for generic scanners because the OBD II data format on the relevant J1962 pins (7 and 15 ) is compatible with such scanners.

The Vehicle Battery Adapter (VBA)
The VBA provides power to the PDU (and VIA if required) and supplies a battery reference level. There is also protection from load-dump and reverse polarity along with PDU supply isolation for floating measurements. These features are also incorporated in the MPA. Therefore, under normal circumstances the VBA is not required for diagnostics, however where ANY analogue measurements between probes are being taken the VBA MUST be used.
