Generic Diagnostic Equipment
Scan ToolThe typical (generic) scan tool will be equipped with an SAE J1962 diagnostic plug compatible with the diagnostic socket in the vehicle, a cable and an appropriate power source. The scan tool must be equipped with the software to interrogate the vehicle system and this may take the form of a memory cartridge, specific to Jaguar.
The tool manufacturers handbook will instruct the user in the correct method of using the tool and the subsequent system interrogation.
CAUTION: Disconnection of ECM multi plugs may introduce other fault codes. Following rectification & reconnection, please ensure that no induced codes exist.
Service Equipment
Fault finding at non-franchised service centers assumes the use of generally available electrical instruments, as detailed below.
Digital Multimeter
1. The digital multimeter specified for use by Jaguar must comply with the following;
- 0-20 volts
- 0-10 amps
- 0-10 megohms
- 3.5 digit
- Better than 1% accuracy
A meter reading of 0 to 0.51 ohm is considered to be a short circuit and acceptable for continuity checks.
For insulation checks, readings less than 10 megaohm are considered open circuit and therefore good, those greater than 10 megaohm are failed.
Component resistances within stated ranges are considered within specification and therefore good.
Megger
2. This may also be known as an Insulation Tester and is used to introduce a potential into a wire to show any weakness in the insulation. This instrument, though not specifically identified in pin point test, may be used in place of a multimeter when checking cable insulation, however make sure that all related components are isolated. The instrument should comply with the following;
- Energization potential 500 to 1000 volts
- Resistance range of 100 megaohm
- Better than 10% accuracy
CAUTION: This equipment has the potential to damage electrical components, disconnect any related components and pay specific attention to control module connections.
Oscilloscope
3. This instrument may be used to monitor and verify wave form frequency and amplitude. The oscilloscope must comply with the following;
- 1 MHz bandwidth
- 0.1 - 10 volts per division (DC)
- 0.1 - 10 volts per division (AC)
- Better than 10% accuracy
Equipment Standards
Please ensure that all measuring and test equipment is regularly calibrated (accompanied by a relevant certificate where appropriate) and that connectors and leads are not damaged.
CAUTION: Probing at the rear of connectors, through the seal, is specifically prohibited.
