Long Cranking - Difficult Warm/Hot Start - Diagnosis Procedure - AJ 26 Normally Aspirated Engines

Remove and destroy Bulletin 303-39, dated 03/00. Replace with this Bulletin. Revisions are shown with asterisks.

Issue:

This bulletin provides a series of checks to carry out when diagnosing difficult hot starting or if leaking injectors are suspected.

Action:

In case of a customer complaint of difficult hot starting, perform the following procedures:

Prior to performing the procedure in this bulletin on 1997-98 MY XK8 vehicles, check if the fuel tank pressure control valve (Rochester valve) is leaking. For instructions on checking the Rochester valve refer to Bulletin 310-02, dated 12/97.

Note:
No time allowance has been allocated for checking the Rochester Valve or for vehicle standing time in this operation.

PROCEDURE TO VERIFY CUSTOMER COMPLAINT OF DIFFICULT HOT STARTING

1. Road test vehicle for ten minutes to ensure transmission and engine are running at normal temperature.

2. Drive vehicle into workshop (away from draft).

3. Leave the hood closed to keep heat in the engine bay.

4. Place the J-Gate shift selector in "P".

5. Apply the hand brake.

6. Hold engine speed at 2000 rpm for one minute.

7. Release the throttle pedal and allow the engine to idle for five seconds, switch the ignition off.

8. Allow the vehicle to stand for 60 minutes.

9. Start the engine without throttle assistance. The engine should start cleanly in approximately one second. If the engine struggles to run or takes longer than two seconds to start, first check that the throttle is not sticking closed as follows:

^ Ensure ignition is turned off open the hood and fit fender covers. Remove the air intake duct from the top of the throttle body.

^ Manually press the throttle butterfly firmly shut. If the butterfly is sticking and is coated in carbon, follow the cleaning instructions referred to in Bulletin 310-06 and repeat steps 1 - 9.

^ If the butterfly opens immediately, smoothly and without sticking, it is unlikely that the butterfly has been sticking and causing starting difficu1ties.

10. If the throttle butterfly is not sticking, but the engine struggles to run or takes longer than two seconds to start, replace all eight injectors and repeat steps 1 - 9 previously shown (R.O. Number 18.10.02 includes labor time allowance for diagnosis and retesting).

11. Reconnect and secure the air intake duct to the top of the throttle body. Remove fender covers and close the hood.
