Engine Oil - Revised Viscosity Ratings
Remove and destroy Bulletin 100-10, dated 10/97.
Replace with this Bulletin.
The viscosity information has been revised.
Issue:
Jaguar has found that the use of an engine oil with a viscosity higher than that desirable in certain operating conditions can affect the operation of the Variable Valve Timing, (VVT) unit used on the 3.0 Liter V6 engine.
As a result, it has been decided to adopt a common engine oil standard across all V6 and V8 engines.
Oils must not be used in temperatures outside the limits indicated for each viscosity grade in the chart below.
The information contained in this Technical Bulletin also supersedes that contained in the Driver's Handbook.
Please ensure that this revised information is distributed to your workshop staff and to all customers with XK8 or V8 XJ Series vehicles.
Any damage resulting from the use of engine oils other than those specified by Jaguar Cars will not be covered by Jaguar Warranty, and will therefore be the sole responsibility of the dealer or customer concerned.
Action:
Follow the engine oil specifications detailed below when adding or changing engine oil. Use only engine oils that comply with these specifications and have viscosity grades appropriate to the ambient temperatures experienced in the market concerned.
USA/CANADA
Use engine oil that meets or exceeds API SJ/EC and ILSAC GF2. SAE 5W/30 is the preferred engine oil in most climate conditions although SAE 10W130 or SAE 10W/40 are acceptable in moderate to hot conditions.
MEXICO ONLY
Use engine oil that meets or exceeds API SJ/EC and WSAC GF2. Vehicles for the Mexico market must use fully synthetic oils of the following viscosities:
^ 5W-40, 5W-50
^ 10W-40, 10W-50 15W-40, 15W-50
