Heater - Poor Performance: Overview

Poor Heater Performance - Coolant Specification Change - Service Action S 813

Issue:

Some 1997 MY XK8 vehicles within the above VIN range may experience reduced heater performance caused by reduced coolant flow through the heater core resulting from deterioration of the coolant solution. The old coolant is blue/green in color.

To correct this condition, XK8 vehicles starting with VIN 010343, are factory filled with a new coolant, D542, which is yellow in color.

This bulletin provides the procedure to follow on vehicles within the above VIN 001036-010342. A new radiator flushing tool (100-020) has been developed to assist coolant flushing during the procedure. This tool has been issued as part of the essential tool program.

Action:

On XK8 vehicles within the above VIN range, perform the following procedures according to the vehicle VIN, either at dealership level PDI or at the next service visit. In case of a customer complaint of poor heater performance, arrange for an appointment as soon as possible.

VIN 001036-005957 Perform heater performance test. If the test indicates poor heater output: Perform a chemical flushing. Flush existing blue/green coolant from cooling system with water and refill with yellow coolant.

VIN 005958-010342 Flush existing blue/green coolant from cooling system with water and refill with yellow coolant.

D. REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM WITH COOLANT D542

CAUTION:
Do not permit the vehicle to stand overnight in the following conditions:
^ with the cooling system drained
^ with the cooling system filled with either of the flushing solutions
^ without draining the part2 solution and flushing, draining, and refilling again with plain water.

Warranty summary codes have been assigned to this service action in order to simplify claim submission. The dealership will be reimbursed the parts and labor time allowance as indicated.

DCS DEALERS

Submit claims using the appropriate summary code for the vehicle model and work performed.

Follow standard campaign submission procedures.

NON-DCS DEALERS

Submit claims on the Recall Campaign Summary form W-25. Enter the appropriate summary code for the vehicle model and work performed in the Repair Code column. Do not use the W-1 warranty claim form.
