Loose Squab Cover - Front Seats - Install Additional Clips

Issue:

Some 1997-98 MY XK8 vehicles within the above VIN range may experience the seat squab cover working loose from its anchorage in the back panel.

This condition can be repaired by reworking the seat squab cover attachment to the back panel, as detailed.

From VIN 25904, a new strengthened trim clip was used which can be retrofitted on seats where the cover is working loose.

Action:

In case of a customer complaint of a loose front seat squab cover on an XK8 vehicle within the above VIN range, modify the seat as described in this bulletin.

A typical tool for the removal of the cover clips, such as Snap-On Tools no. A173A, is shown in Illustration 1. The tool must be tapered and smooth enough to probe beneath a clip to lift it out of the channel and also to partially compress the clip to release its tangs from the squab back cover facing material.

ADDING ADDITIONAL SECURING CLIPS

Starting at one lower corner, carefully pry each trim clip in turn until the entire squab cover is free from the channel in the back panel.

Note:
The clips must be removed carefully to avoid damaging the facing material.

2. Carefully remove the bronze colored clips from the cover's edge strip and discard them.

3. The replacement clips are colored black and should be installed to the cover's edge strip as follows.

4. Find the center point on the strip, install a clip at this position and then install a clip at every 12.5 cm. (4.9 in.) along the strip which will require 11 clips.

5. At each end, two clips must be positioned close together within 1 cm. (0.39 in.) of the end of the strip, making a total of 15 clips, (Illustration 2).

6. When the clips are in position the cover should be aligned at the headrest area so that the seams are equal distances from the center line of the seat. The clip at the center point can then be pressed into the channel of the back panel and fully engaged.

7. Press the edge strip into the channel of the back panel and then press the next clip into position. Continue in this manner until all the clips are fully inserted.
