Removing Soft Top Cover

1. Remove the roof compartment carpet from the vehicle.

2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the backlight heater.

3. Lower the convertible-top.

4. Remove the rear seat cushion.

Refer to 501-10 (76.70.37) on the JTIS CD-ROM for removal instructions.

5. Remove the rear seat squab.

Refer to 501-05 (76.70.38) on the JTIS CD-ROM for removal instructions.

6. Remove both rear quarter casings.

Refer to 501-05 (76.13.73) on the JTIS CD-ROM for removal instructions.

7. Disconnect the harness connectors from both rear speaker assemblies.

8. Disconnect the security antenna mountings from the rear speaker assemblies.

9. Remove the securing nuts, and remove both rear speaker assemblies from the vehicle.





10. Remove the nuts securing the squab-panel support bracket, and remove the bracket Illustration 1.

11. Power the convertible-top to the latched position.





12. Remove the screws each side of the headlining to the main column brackets of the convertible-top frame (Illustration 2).





13. Release both of the headlining rear tensioning rods (Illustration 3).





14. Apply masking tape around the edge of headlining in the backlight opening (Illustration 4).

15. Cover the vehicle body at the rear of the convertible-top, to protect the paint work.





16. Using a flat bladed lever, remove and discard the backlight rubber seal (Illustration 5).

17. Using a sharp pointed tool, pierce the bottom center of the backlight adhesive, taking care not to damage the headlining or glass.





18. Assemble the cheese-wire cutting tool through the pierced hole (Illustration 6).

19. With assistance, cut through the adhesive around the backlight glass with the cheese wire, taking extreme care not to damage the headlining.

20. Attach lifting handles to the glass and carefully remove the glass from vehicle, place the glass on a bench covered with a clean sheet.

21. Remove residual adhesive from the opening flange and backlight glass.

Note:
Take note of the position of the staple rows in the backlight frame, for reference when installing the replacement cover.

22. Remove the staples securing the convertible-top cover to the backlight frame.

23. Power the convertible-top to the 3/4 raised position.

24. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

25. Rotate the tap on the convertible-top operating pump to the manual position.





26. Remove securing screws, and remove LH and RH cantrail seals, Illustration 7.

27. Remove securing screws, and remove LH and RH cantrail seal carriers.





28. Remove LH and RH main column seals, Illustration 8.

29. Remove securing screws, and remove LH and RH main-column seal carriers.





30. Remove securing screws, and remove the latch striker from the header plate, Illustration 9.

31. Remove securing screws, and remove both of the latch guide-pins from the header plate.





32. Remove securing screws, and remove the header plate from the convertible-top frame (Illustration 10)

Note:
Note the areas where the cover is bonded to the frame, for reference when installing the replacement cover.

33. Release the front edge and main column areas of the cover which are bonded to the frame with adhesive.





34. Disconnect both of the cover's side tension cables from the frame, Illustration 11.





35. Release the cover's front retaining rod from the slots in the frame, and remove the rod from the cover (Illustration 12).

36. Manually move the convertible-top into the raised position.





37. Remove 14 bolts from the tack strip at the rear of the cover (Illustration 13),





38. Release the tack Strip from the vehicle and remove the tack Strip end covers. Ensure that the vehicle body is protected when releasing the tack strip (Illustration 14).





39. Drill-out the pop-rivet securing each end of the tack strip to the cover (Illustration 15).

40. Release the cover from the tack strip retaining flange.

41. Pull out both of the side tension cables from the piping in the cover.

42. Remove the cover from the vehicle.

43. Clean the adhesive from the backlight frame.

44. Clean the adhesive from the convertible-top frame.
