Scan Tool Testing and Procedures

WARNING: Refer to Service Precautions and the Portable Diagnostic Unit (PDU) User Guide before working on occupant restraints. Service Precautions

The complexity of the electronics involved with the Occupant Restraint System and the potential danger of accidentally deploying the airbag(s), precludes the use of workshop general electrical test equipment. Therefore, reference should be made to the PDU User Guide for detailed instructions on testing.

The PDU systematically tests and analyses all electrical functions of the airbag and seat belts.

Where a fault is indicated, some basic diagnostic methods may be necessary to confirm that connections are good and that wiring is not damaged, before replacing a component.

In certain markets (USA) blink codes are provided at the airbag interrogation socket. These codes can be read using JD 205 Harness and Lamp. This is tool should never be used in preference to the PDU.
