System Description

The ignition system provides timing control in accordance with the engine management strategy and powertrain sensor inputs; the system consists of:

engine control module
ignition coils supply relay
ignition control modules
ignition coils
spark plugs

Ignition spark is produced by individual on-plug coil units.

There are two ignition amplifiers; module #1 drives coils 1A, 2B,3B & 4A, while module #2 drives coils 1B 2A, 3A & 4B. The ECM controls the amplifiers.

The ignition system consists of two ignition amplifier modules controlled by the ECM. Each module controls four of the spark plug mounted ignition coils, two on each bank.

The 14 mm spark plugs, one per cylinder, locate in recesses alone the center-line of each cylinder head. The on-plug ignition coils are secured to the camshaft covers and each on-plug coil has its own plastic cover.

Engine Control Module (ECM)
Provides triggering for the ignition control modules to control individual firing of the spark plugs supplies ground for the ignition coils supply relay

Ignition Coils Supply Relay
The ignition coils supply relay is located in the engine and transmission control module compartment.

The ECM switches a ground to the coil of the ignition coils supply relay; the relay energizes and switches a 12v supply to the ignition control modules and the ignition coils.
