Chrome Wheels - Change Of Specification - Service Action S817
Remove and destroy Bulletin 204-06, dated 2/98. Replace with this Bulletin. Revisions are marked with asterisk.
Issue
Some 1997 MY XK8 vehicles, within the above VIN range, that are equipped with 17 inch chrome plated wheels (both original equipment and accessory) may experience corrosion of the chrome plating. If the plating corrodes where the bead of the tire seats, it could allow the slow escape of air, leading to deflation of the tire.
From VIN 011984 on, chrome plated wheels of the revised specification were installed in production, which do not exhibit this concern. These wheels may be recognized, once the tire has been removed, by grey paint instead of chrome plating, across the inside of the rim. Vehicles equipped with accessory chrome wheels are also affected by this Service Action, if the accessory wheels are chrome plated, rather than painted grey, across the inside of the rim.
Action
Contact the customer and arrange for the replacement at the earliest opportunity of all chrome plated road wheels on all XK8 Models.
ACCESSORY OR REPLACEMENT WHEELS:
All Part No. MJA 6116BB accessory/replacement wheels shipped to dealers prior to 30th April 1997 are of incorrect specification, and require replacement under this Service Action.
WORKSHOP PROCEDURE
1. Position the vehicle on a lift. Loosen the wheel nuts.
2. Remove the full size spare wheel from the luggage compartment.
3. Partly raise the vehicle. Check the tire pressures, to determine whether the owner is using "Comfort" or "Normal" pressure settings. (See step 7 below).
4. Remove the wheel nuts. Remove the four road wheels from the vehicle. Label each tire (Left Front, Right Rear, etc) before removal of the wheel, so that each tire can be reinstalled in its original location on the vehicle.
5. Deflate and remove the 5 tires affected.
*Note:
All displaced wheels must be returned to Jaguar Cars through normal parts return channels.
6. Use particular care regarding the direction of installation of "Assimetrico" tires. Install the tires on the replacement wheels so the words "Externo - Aussen - Exteneure - Outer" molded on the outer face of each tire correspond to the outer face of the wheel. Ensure that no cosmetic damage is caused to the replacement wheels as the tires are installed.
7. Adjust the tires to the recommended pressures shown:
8. Balance each wheel, using only self-adhesive balance weights,
9. Reinstall the wheel and tire assemblies, ensuring that the tires are returned to their original locations on the vehicle, as marked during removal. Install the retaining nuts finger tight.
10. Lower the lift.
11. Using a torque wrench, fully tighten the wheel retaining nuts:
Torque Wrench Setting: 102 Nm. (75 lb ft).
12. Where applicable, replace and secure the spare wheel in its location in the luggage compartment.
