Oil Weep - Rear Face of Cylinder Heads
Issue:
Some vehicles equipped with the AJ-V8 engine may experience oil weeps on the rear faces of cylinder heads. The cause may be oil weeping past a plug which is expanded, during engine manufacture, inside the inner (ie. the hole closest to the center-line of the engine) of the two threaded holes on the back of each cylinder head. These holes (Illustration 1) are also used to install the rear engine lifting brackets.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of oil weepage that is found to come from the rear of the cylinder head, install a "Dowty" oil-sealing washer and bolt in the inner hole as described below.
Clean the rear face of the cylinder head before installing the bolt and washer.
Torque: 15Nm (11 lb ft)
XK8 MODELS
1. For access to A bank (right side of engine), remove the air intake duet/Mass Air Flow sensor/air cleaner cover assembly.
2. For access to B bank (left side of engine), remove the screw that retains the coolant reservoir and move the reservoir aside.
V8 XJ SERIES MODELS
1. For access to either side, first remove the bulkhead covers on both sides of the vehicle, and then the center cover.
2. For access to A bank (right side of engine):
Remove the air intake tube/Mass Air Flow sensor/air cleaner cover assembly.
Remove the bolt that retains the harness bracket to the cylinder head.
3. Install a "Dowty" sealing washer on each side of the harness bracket before reinstalling and tightening the original bolt which retains the bracket. Then reinstall all other components removed earlier.
If it becomes necessary to remove the bolt(s) and washer(s) to allow rear engine lifting brackets to be installed, ensure that new sealing washers are installed when the bolts are reinstalled after completing the operation.
