Scraping Noise - Front Brake Disc Shield - Install Washer
Issue:
Some 1997 MY XK8 vehicles within the above VIN range may experience a scraping noise from the front brake area. This noise may be caused by light contact between the brake disc and its shield. Evidence of light contact may be visible on the shield.
The condition can be caused by the shield bracket having twisted as the bottom ball joint retaining nut was tightened. A washer was introduced in production from VIN 005661, that is installed between each bottom ball joint retaining nut and the retaining bracket of the disc shield, to prevent it from twisting.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of a scraping noise from a 1997 MY XK8 vehicle within the above VIN range, check for any evidence of contact between the shield and the disc. If contact is found, proceed as follows:
1. Remove the bottom ball joint nut.
2. Examine the bracket (Illustration 1) for possible cracks or other damage.
3. Eliminate any distortion in the shield.
4. Install a washer; part no. WA 112081/J, then the ball joint retaining nut.
5. Make sure that the bracket does not twist as the nut is tightened. Torque to nut to 52 lb. ft. (70 Nm.)
