Squeak/Rattle From Fascia Area -
Check Bulkhead Brace Fasteners
Issue:
Some 1997 MY-ON XK8 convertibles may experience noise in the bulkhead area that is caused by the mountings of the bulkhead braces. Each bulkhead brace is connected between a suspension strut mounting stud at the front and an eye in the bulkhead panel at the rear. Each bulkhead brace is retained at the front by a retaining nut, (B, Illustration 1), and at the rear end by a Torx screw through the eye and a captive nut attached to the brace (A, Illustration 1). At VIN 020871 the size of the bolt was increased from T40 to T50. This checking procedure can apply to any vehicle regardless of VIN.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of noise from the fascia area on an XK8 convertible, perform the following procedure before starting any work in the fascia area.
1. Remove and retain the cap from the suspension strut mounting stud and nut, (B, Illustration 1).
2. Remove and discard the nut.
3. Unscrew the Torx screw and retain it.
4. Remove the brace and check that the threads of the captive nut of the brace and the screw are cleared of any obstruction.
5. Install the brace on the suspension strut mounting stud and then install and lightly tighten a new nut.
6. Apply a coat of thread locking compound, to the leading threads of the Torx screw.
7. Align the brace to the eye, insert the screw into the captive nut and then tighten it to the torque specification:
T40 Torx screw - before VIN 020871 22-28 Nm (17-20 lb. ft.)
T50 Torx screw - from VIN 020871 40-54 Nm (30-39 lb. ft.)
8. Tighten the nut on the suspension strut mounting stud to 26-34 Nm (20-24 lb. ft.).
9. Replace the cap on the stud and nut.
10. Repeat the operation for the other side.
11. Allow the locking compound to cure and then road test to check for the suspected noise.
