Disarming Accessory Inclination Sensor - Install Switch - Modification Procedure
Issue:
While no North American vehicle is factory-equipped with an inclination sensor, it is available as a dealer installed accessory and during the vehicle's history, may have been installed at the customer's request.
There is a possibility that during transportation, such as by sea ferry or by train, of a vehicle equipped with a Jaguar accessory inclination sensor that with the security system armed, the alarm may sound if the vehicle experiences unusual altitudes.
Since there is currently no way to disable the accessory inclination sensor during such transportation, the following modification will allow the customer to disable the inclination sensor as required without affecting the security system. The modification requires a switch to be inserted in the circuit to arm/disarm the inclination sensor.
This modification is NOT a Warranty item. It should be installed only at the customer's request and is chargeable to the customer.
Action:
The following Workshop Procedure will cover the mounting of the switch and the insertion of the appropriate wiring.
INSTALLING SWITCH FOR ACCESSORY INCLINATION SENSOR
1. In the luggage compartment, remove the battery cover, floor carpet, front liner and right-side liner on XK8, left side liner on V8 XJ Series. Note customer preferences and then disconnect the battery using procedure in Technical Bulletin 414-01.
2. Place the side liner on to a clean workbench surface.
3. Illustration 1, cutting diagram, shows the front face of the liner with the required rectangular cut-out and its dimensions. However, the flock finish of the front face prevents successful marking and cutting from that side so the reverse face of the liner should used for that purpose.
4. Place masking tape over the cutting area on the reverse face of the liner and then mark the position at the dimensions shown in Illustration 1, on the masking tape.
5. Using a suitable sharp knife, cut along the lines to leave a rectangular aperture in the Liner.
NOTE:
As there is no mechanical retaining device the switch must be a fraction fit in the liner, therefore it is better to cut the hole smaller than the dimensions and then later enlarge it to be a snug fit.
6. Remove the masking tape and fit the switch in the aperture.
Note:
The switch should be fitted as shown in Illustration 1, with the dot, (off) in the upper position and the circle, (on), in the lower position.
7. The switch, (A, Illustration 2), must be inserted in the yellow/orange wire which connects the main harness to the inclination sensor, (F, Illustration 2).
8. Release the yellow/orange wire from the retaining tape behind the side Liner position.
9. At the position below where the switch will be when the side liner is in position, cut the yellow/orange wire and strip the insulation to prepare a connection.
10. Fit the heat shrink sleeves, (E, Illustration 2), over the ends of the yellow/orange wire.
11. Remove the surplus insulation from both ends of the red wires.
12. Fit a yellow/orange wire and a red wire into a splice, (D, Illustration 2), and then crimp the splice securely.
13. Repeat the operation with the other two wires.
14. Slide the tubing over the crimped splices and then, using a suitible hot air gun, shrink the sleeves into place.
15. Insert the red wires into the switch connector ML40, (B, Illustration 2). Align the wires according to the position of the male pins in the switch connector.
16. Re-connect the battery and test the working of the switch before replacing the Side Liner in position.
17. When the test has been completed apply tape to fix the harness in position and and then refit the side liner, front liner, floor carpet and the battery cover.
Note:
When the switch is operated to disable the Inclination Sensor and the Security System is then armed, as when commencing transportation, there is no audible or visual signal. When the Security System is later disarmed, after transportation, an "error tone" will be emitted to remind the Customer that the Inclination Sensor is still disabled and the switch must be returned to the ON position.
Make sure the customer is advised of this change.
