Sender Units - Fuel Tank Level - Revised Specification Unit

ISSUE:
Some 1995-97 MY Sedan Range vehicles may experience a customer complaint of inaccurate fuel level readings. An improved fuel tank leve sender units is now available.

The float arm has been reshaped to avoid possible contact between the float arm and the fuel return hose within the tank, which may result in the unit sticking. In addition, the improved sender units incorporate a gold-plated moving contact, intended to avoid concerns of a gauge reading of approximately 3/4 full when the tank is actually completely full. This condition results from contamination of the moving contact from sulfur residues in fuel, which causes the resistance reading, with the tank full, to be the same as when the tank is 3/4 full.

ACTION:
In case of a customer complaint of inaccurate fuel tank readings on a 1995-97 MY Sedan Range vehicle, as described above, install the improved sender unit. Refer to section 5.1.12, R. 0. Number 88.25.32 for the procedure.

Warning:
Working on the fuel system results in fuel and fuel vapor being present in the atmosphere. Fuel vapor is extremely flammable, hence great care must be taken while working on the fuel system. Adhere strictly to the following precautions:

Do not smoke in the work area. Display 'no smoking' signs around the area.

Disconnect the battery before working on the fuel system.

Do not connect/disconnect electrical circuits, use electrical equipment or other tools or engage in working practices which in any way may result in the production of sparks.

Ensure that a C02 fire extinguisher is close at hand. Ensure that dry sand is available to soak up any fuel spillage.

Empty fuel using suitable fire proof equipment into an authorized explosion proof container.

Do not empty fuel while working in a workshop or a pit.

Ensure that working area is well ventilated. Ensure that any work on the fuel system is only carried out by experienced and well qualified maintenance personnel.

Ensure that fume extraction equipment is used where appropriate.
