Cooling System Fan Fuse Failure - Single Pressure Switch - Service Modification

ISSUE:

Technical Bulletin 14-04, Dated 10/95 described cases of repeated cooling fan fuse failure caused by failure of the single pressure switch, which controls slow fan speed operation.

Following investigations into this concern and reappraisal of vehicle operating conditions, the single pressure switch has been deleted from the vehicle specification starting with VIN 761570. The switch has been replaced by a shorting plug. The cooling fans will now operate continuously at slow speed when the ignition switch is in position II (normal engine running position). This means the 86°C contacts on the radiator thermostatic switch are now redundant. High speed mode is still controlled by the refrigerant triple pressure switch and the radiator thermostatic switch as before. Refer to Fig. 7.1 of the Sedan Range 1995 Electrical Guide.

ACTION:

In case of a customer complaint, refer to the diagnosis given in Technical Bulletin 14-04, Dated 10/95. If the diagnosis confirms that the single pressure switch is defective, modify the cooling fan circuit as described in this bulletin. If the cooling fan relay module has failed in either a short circuit or open circuit mode, the cooling fan circuit must be modified as described in addition to replacing the relay module. The modification is necessary because of the known failure mode of the pressure switch, which may cause sticking of the relay contacts and/or may switch the fans into a parallel circuit condition (high speed mode), causing the fan fuses to blow.

COOLING FAN CIRCUIT MODIFICATION PROCEDURE





1. Identify the single pressure switch (Illustration 1) and disconnect the harness connector.

2. Unscrew and remove the single pressure switch from the Schrader valve connection (Illustration 1) on the refrigeration line.

WARNING!
Vehicles within VIN range 720001-720579: Refer to Technical Bulletin 14-02 when removing the single pressure switch on vehicles within the above VIN range. The bulletin provides information on which vehicles are equipped with Schrader isolating valves in the switch fitting.

3. Install and tighten the dust cap provided in the modification kit on the exposed Schrader valve connection.

4. Remove the harness connector from its mounting bracket.

5. Insert the shorting plug supplied in the modification kit into the harness connector. Insert the harness connector into its bracket.

6. Turn the ignition switch to position II and check that the cooling fans run at the slow speed.
